Good day,

Does anyone have any ideas how to solve the following problem:

� A geographically dispersed operations group manages both Easynet and external
  customer networks (networks = systems + networks) using MCC V1.3 and suite of
  Polycenter tools. 
� We wish to display all 'events' (DEC & external) onto a single iconic map in
  either or both Operation centres.

We have MCC running in each customer's network (using the customer's
namespace). We somehow need to "feed" a central MCC platform to gather all
events to be displayed on a central iconic map. This concept seemed "trivial"
until we discovered... MCC doesn't really support multiple namespaces... OUCH!

I've seen the note in EMF_REQ about support for mulitple namespaces... are we
getting close? Is it even being considered seriously for V1.next? Am I trying
make MCC do too much?

Or, does anyone have any ideas how to handle the above? I'm thinking of
registering entities as REFERENCES in our Operations namespace and somehow
"map" the real customer entities to the REFERENCE entities... we can then use
the data collector for event gathering...

Any ideas/hints are appreciated...

    Scott, can you be a bit more generous with information on HP OpenView. 
    I hear a lot about it and my interest is peaked.  Do you have any

    Sorry George, I was being sarcastic.  Imagine what customers think.
    They must think it to be correct because that is what they are buying.
    
    There is no competitive information available on things like HP
    Openview, Spectrum, SUN Netmanager etc. available from  Digital.
    Your only source is likely to be a networking trade magazine, the
    customer, or the HP rep.
    
    The lack of replies to your note George is typical of the problems
    being faced by those trying to implement solutions with our current
    products.  There is no distributed management capabilites in Polycenter 
    Network Manager 200/400 product and unlikely to be in the near future.  
    The responsibility for providing workable solutions that meet customer
    needs appears to be left to those with the resources to customize the
    software on a per customer basis.  My local customer base which has
    expressed interest in POLYCENTER and specifically network management 
    products are not interested in funding Digital to develope software on
    an engament basis. They want to buy off the self products and with some 
    consulting implement it in a distributed environment.  
    
    We each raised these issues at IMSYM with a similar non response or a
    statement of no funding.  I can only assume that the lack of funding is
    indicative of a shift of direction away from the enterprise management
    arena.  
    
    If I'm out in left field (which I hope) then perphaps someone can
    clarify my misconceptions.

Good day,

I'm starting to feel real uneasy about proposing Frameworks and/or Network 
Manager 200/400 to paying customers... We have real problems to solve with 
real dollars for Digital to make but... How can I keep pushing Frameworks and 
NM200/400 when their future is so bleak?? (ie. no distributed capability, 
questionable funding, questionable DEC commitment)

Let me be blunt...

Is Frameworks dead? (ie not funded and/or not "appropriately" funded)
Is DEC getting out of the enterprise management business?
Is DEC getting out of the network management business?

Geez, all I hear about is how our Polycenter products are not being funded... 
(Frameworks/MCC, System Watchdog, PolyAM, etc, etc). Just this winter I read 
about all the great plans for Frameworks ("Framework Directions" document); 
and at IMSYM, the message was: "All Polycenter products will integrate with 
Frameworks!" I take it things have changed?

I've been reluctant to pursue 3rd party applications for delivery of our 
services thinking that Frameworks/MCC was a core product for DEC and that it 
would evolve to a "best-in-class" product. The marketing hype must have 
worked cuz I bought into it a few years back. Now, 2.5 YEARS later, the 
products are more stable but very limited in functionality and ease-of-use. 
Hey Scott (re:-.1), maybe it's time to take a closer look at HP Openview et 
al...

I really don't expect a detailed response (ie. budgeting numbers, etc) but a 
straight answer about the future direction for Frameworks/MCC would be 
appreciated. I get the distinct feeling there are a *lot* of us feeling 
frustrated about this (including folks in Frameworks/MCC land?). Is there any 
one I should pursue this with in product management or elsewhere?

Sorry for venting but I feel (a little) better now...

    As you can see by the overwhelming response all fears have been put to
    rest.  I extracted this note and mailed it to the product managers.  I
    also followed it up with voicemail.  Same result.
    
    However, Marion Weisenfeld was very helpfull with regards to OSF/DME.

Hi Scott,

keep listening to the quiet noise :-)! I too tried to reach product management...

Needless to say, the response was everything else but satisfying. The only (very
cooperative and motivated) exception was Marian Weisenfeld.

    If you're still interested in a solution to this problem, we developed
    something similar to send DECnet and UDM events from a set of regional
    DECmcc systems to one (or more) central DECmcc systems. Contact the
    Engineering Project Manager for the software (Richard Lavin @OLO,
    DTN 851-2674) if you want to see a Functional Spec., or you need any
    more information.
