5015.0. "Interoperability with Pathworks" by BELLS::SYSTEM (A wave without a shore...) Thu May 06 1993 09:17

Hi,

I see from the documentation of the new Polycenter kit that there is an
interoperability problem between it and several pther products. I have to put
together, and support, a system that is to have the new EMS (sorry, Polycenter
Network Manager) kit and Pathworks on it (pathworks will already be installed
so EMS will be the last product onto the system).

Can anybody elaborate on the implications and severity of having these reside
on the same system? Will pathworks still work properly? Also, what happens if I
upgrade Pathworks in the future - will EMS die?

I did try doing a conference listing to get advice but after *3* hours I still
hadn't even got a single page up so I had to kill it! (moderators - might it be
time to archive off the 'old' stuff as VMS Engineering does with VMS notes to
make the conference more accessible?)

I have got people hunting for the answer to this all over the place at the moment
but so far nobody has turned up anything. Can anybody help as I am desperate and
am running out of time to get an answer.

Thanks,
Martin

We don't really understand what you are asking here.
Could you be more specific about what documentation you are reading,
and what problem you are seeing?

If you are asking about the DECthreads compatability problem, then it
is fairly simple. The Polycenter network products require a minimum
version of DECthreads in order to run correctly. Unfortunately, some
other products, when they install, will overwrite DECthreads
libraries with an older version. (The Polycenter product installation
procedures correctly check for the presence of threads, and only update if the
version on the system is older).

As a result, it is safest to install the Polycenter 400 package last.
If you later upgrade a product that is not careful of threads in its
installation procedure, then you may have to restore the correct version
of threads. There is information on this in the release notes.
