4910.0. "IBM Network Management for RS6000" by BIGUN::WULFF () Tue Apr 20 1993 04:57

    Please excuse me if this or a similar question has been asked.

    Does IBM have a network management system on R6000?

    If so why should a customer buy MCC and not the IBM network management
    system?

    The reason for the question is that the customer must have a very good
    reason for not using an IBM product, as this is preferred. The
    person making the decision, would like to buy MCC.

    Thanks for any help.

4910.1Yes, NetView/6000FRAIS::ORCHIS::MAASSInformation, that's all I need...Wed May 05 1993 16:0136
Hi,

there's a product called NetView/6000. It is a co-development with HP and mainly
an enhanced HP OpenView capable of sending information to NetView, which acts
as a central management system.

Disadvantages:

- GUI only for SNMP entities, since NetView/6000 can't access the IBM environment
- Only SNMP management
- Not fully integrated

I have to admit, though, that this information is based on hearsay, so don't push
too hard in a customer meeting. Try to get information from IBM directly. Some-
times they are very helpful, if you sound "professional".

Positioning:

DECmcc can do DECnet, SNMP, Bridges, FDDI, Terminalservers, SNA (via Netview),
applications, queues, command procedures, PABXs, air conditioners etc. all via a
consistent GUI.

This broad range of integration gives DECmcc a clear advantage over niche SNMP
solutions like NetView/6000.

BTW: There will be a new version of SNMP, which is said to be incompatible with
the old one. If this is true, the customer can as well dump a normal SNMP manager,
since he won't be able to use it in a mixed SNMP V1/V2 environment. We only add a
module, and vroooomm...

Hope this helps

4910.2becareful with SNMP V1, V2 statementHERON::PATEL_ALoLo-AQIC-I82Q-B4IP, - LMFThu May 06 1993 06:4211
Josch, be carefull with the SNMP V1/V2 statement.

    a snmp manager using V1 implementation will be able to work in a V2
    environment, the snmp manager just will not be able to take advanatge
    of the features of bulk get etc in a V2 agent, and can't use security
    of V2
