A customer is reporting problems with statitics on recorded data for a
node4, so in an attempt to duplicate/analyze the condtion, I recorded
some as well. Looking at the counter values for the past data rasies
several questions.
1) the start time for the retrieval was 12:00, yet the first
sample is time stamped at 11:30.
2) for every sample in example #1, except the first and last,
there is a duplicatly time stamped set of data.
3) in the second example, a duration was added to the qualifier.
This produced even screwier results, the duplication seemed
to be gone, but then pop back up later. ie time stamps of:

The described behavior of Past Time Show is correct and should not
give any problem with statistics calculation.
Most likely your customer did not record all data required for statistics.
Note that counters are not enough for statistics calculation. Please, look
at Performance Analyzer Use manual what entity/partitions must be recorded
for statistics on historical data.
A very short description of the Past Time Show:
When a scope of interest time in the Show command is in the past the
Information Manager returns all data for the specified period of time as
well as data just before and just after this period.
In your example historical data have been recorded every 30 minutes:

Sam,
I realize that more than just the counter partition is needed to
calculate statistics. The customer recorded partition *, as did I. Now
we wand calculate the statistics using the data that was recorded. When
I tried to retrieve the counter info, I was expecting and looking for a
way to just dump it out. I was not in any way expecting to get
duplicate info. Is there a way to just dump the data? I would have
expected this could be done with a simple past time show.

Sam,
Having found how to dump the counter values I did try a little hand
calculation for the statistics. I agree with the customer, there seems
to be a problem. Hope you can tell me I'm wrong and why.
First I have included counter values for the line, a couple for samples
around the start and stop time for the statistics. Next are the
statistics themselves.
I would have thought that we would use a delta value then divide by the
duration. This does not seem to be the case, ie not using a delta value.
Looking at 'data blocks sent' or 'bytes sent' these values seem to be
within 1% of the statistic values 'outbound data blocks' and 'outbound
bytes' for the end of the sample period. The original values of 'data
blocks sent' and 'bytes sent' do not seem to be considered. Any further
statisitcs using these would also seem to be in error. Consider 'outbound
block rate'.
I have only used the two attributes as examples, but feel that this is
most likely the case for all statisitics. During the recording of this
data, none of the counters were zeroed.
Any in sites on this welcome!

The DNA4-AM uses the 'Seconds Since Last Zeroed' attribute to calculate the 'Counter Creation Time' .. because SSLZ has latched, the CCT is incorrect. Does .4 mean that counters must be zeroed before node4 statistics will
be valid? Along with this does it mean that recording data for periods
of over 18 hours will produce invalid data/statistics.
Or what?? The bottom line seems to be that statistics for NODE4s is
hosed.

Hi Steve, My current experiences may help out with this one. I'm not sure if this directly applies to ETHERNET LINE stats but this is what we do for DEMSA SYN circuit stats. We RECORD "CIRCUIT" counters hourly, circuit char daily, and line char daily. We HAVE TO zero the circuit counters for the stats to be valid. This is primarily done by setting the circuit COUNTER TIMER to 65000. This way every 18 hours the circuit zero's itself. The result is that MCC calculates during the 18 hours no problem. When it hits the ZEROED timeframe it errors (something like: get lost your counters were zeroed). The only problem we have with this is that we require a single DAILY number from mcc each night for every circuit. ex. mcc> show node4 x circuit y all statis,for start 9:0 every 8:0 until 17:0 - dur 8:0, in domain z In this example if the counters zero for any reason (manually, automatically, from boot) we miss our metric. We try to minimize this loss of metric by manually (via procedure) zeroing all circuits before 7am so the 18 hour window doesn't impact out daily business hour metrics. best regards, brad... | |||||

Since DECnet Phase 4 nodes have such small counters you need to set
them to automaticaly zero periodically. COnfiguration guidelines
for EASYnet systems specify a Counter Timer. I can't remember
the value or the syntax at the moment though...
DECmcc keeps track of the values so when it reads one that is smaller
than the last it can actually figure out the delta time anyway
and compute the correct values.
