4823.0. "Cisco Management Experience" by MAIL::CLAYTON (Merlin Clayton DTN 445-7217) Mon Apr 05 1993 16:43
Is there anyone in MCC-Land that has extensive pratical experience using
MCC to manage a rather large population of Cisco routers?
We have an on-site network CSE that needs to come up to speed fast on
MCC-Cisco management. Even though he has some training on MCC he has
little practical experience using MCC for SNMP management.
Any input on important attributes, performance statistics, errors statistics,
known 'gotchas', alarms procedures, automated scripts, ways to detect
degraded performance, etc., etc., would certainly help.
The customer plans on deploying over 100 Cisco routers of various types
(AGS+, and 4000) beginning May 1, and expects Digital to be able to support
them from Day-1. I would hope that we don't have to reinvent the wheel here
if others out there have practical experience.
Even though I was originally thinking of MCC specific experience, it occurs
to me that MSU may also be an option since the focus will be only on the
Cisco routers using SNMP. So the same questions above apply for anyone
having MSU experience as well.
Thanks.
Merlin

I've just begun using SNMP to manage ciscos for a customer; there are a few gotcha's to
be aware of:
1. Ed Briggs discovered recently that Cisco has not officially (nor even unofficially)
shipped a bridge MIB for their products; the rest of their MIB seems to
be okay, though.
2. Since this seems to be a new installation, you shouldn't be concerned with
version mismatches of the routers, but that has been a problem at other sites,
since different system software versions have differing agent characteristics.
3. Depending on which version of MCC - (OOPS! - Framework) you're using, the SNMP
management through the ICONIC MAP can be disappointing.
