4802.0. "Problem registering director icon" by BIGUN::MAYNE (`AXP!': Bill the Cat) Fri Apr 02 1993 00:58
ULTRIX 4.3, DECmcc 1.3, novice MCC user
I'm trying to register a directory icon in a domain using the iconic PM. I
presume I have to do this to enable the script AM, etc.
1. Bring up the toolbox.
2. Click on the MCC icon.
3. Fill in the MCC text box with Plugh (a name I haven't used before) and press
OK.
4. Leave the form blank and click OK.
5. Double click on the MCC icon labelled Plugh in the map window.
6. After presenting the "Looking into MCC Plugh" box for about 2 minutes, I
get two error boxes saying
Entity not fully Registered
You may want to fully register it and re-try the Look Into because some child
entities may not be displayed. To do this navigate up to the entity's parent
domain, select the entity and select the Register operation from the Operations
menu.
and
POLYCENTER Message:
error trying to transmit a packet
7. The map view does not change. Selecting the MCC icon Plugh and performing an
Operations Register produces the message "The entity is already registered with
MCC" (the entity's name is given as .plugh).
Catch 22. What's happening, and how do I fix it?
I've tried deleting all the files in /var/mcc and ran setld -c MCRBMS130 INSTALL
to recreate them, and they're all group rw and owned by group mccuser as
suggested in the documentation (and I'm in that group as well).
This worked on another ULTRIX 4.3 machine a couple of weeks ago that had not had
any version of MCC installed on it, then we decided to install 1.3 on a machine
that had MCC 1.2 on it previously. I used IP autoconfiguration to get the domain
(steps discover, build register and map files, register) and then straight away
tried to register the MCC icon.
If it helps, the files produced are in caomcc::~decmcc/IP/cao.

4802.1 | Smells like a problem with IP setup on the system. | MCDOUG::doug | pre-retinal integration | Fri Apr 02 1993 09:48 | 14 |

I'm not a UNIX person, but I this message indicates that there's a problem
with RPC on your system. I seem to remember running into this quite a while
back, but I can't remember exactly what I did to fix it. Hopefully a
more UNIX-literate person from engineering will chime in here...
If you reboot the system, does this problem still exist? Do you have any
other problems or strangeness with the IP setup on your system?

4802.2 | What else? | BIGUN::MAYNE | `AXP!': Bill the Cat | Mon Apr 05 1993 01:16 | 13 |
| I fired up llbd and ran lb_test, things seemed OK.
The machine that it used to work on wasn't running llbd either.
Any other suggestions? Is there an error log somewhere I can look? What files
can I compare between the working system and the non-working system to figure
out what's going on?
I tried registering a script, following the instructions on p1-6 of the script
AM manual, and I get a "no corresponding entity instance exists" error when I do
a Operations->Show->Status.

It appears that the MCC entity is both registered and not registered at the same
time. How could this be? What commands do I use or database do I recreate to fix
it?
