4762.0. "Pb with SNMP AM registration..." by ZTOIS1::VISTA (Renato VISTA, SIS Strasbourg, France) Thu Mar 25 1993 03:15

    Hi,

    Working with DECmcc/VMS V1.3.0, I'm trying to register as snmp entity
    the Director ifself :

    UCX> sho inter qe0
     Interface: qe0
       IP_Addr: 16.188.48.9       NETWRK: 255.0.0.0         BRDCST:
    16.255.255.255
                           Ethernet_Addr: AA-00-04-00-D1-BD
         Flags: UP BRDCST NOTRL RUN

    UCX>sho host 16.188.48.9

         LOCAL database

    Host address    Host name

    16.188.48.9     STRAS5, stras5

    MCC>dir snmp stras5

    SNMP stras5
    AT 25-MAR-1993 09:09:23

    The entity SNMP stras5 is not registered
                      Not Registered Entity = SNMP stras5

    MCC>register snmp .snmp.stras5 Synonym = stras5

    SNMP LOCAL_NS:.snmp.stras5
    AT 25-MAR-1993 09:09:38

    Partial registration success. Please retry later to complete the
    registration.
            Reason for Partial Registration = No response from entity.

    MCC>dir snmp stras5

    SNMP stras5
    AT 25-MAR-1993 09:10:09

    Directory successful, entity has only been partially registered.
                            Registered Name = LOCAL_NS:.snmp.stras5
                                    Address = 16.188.48.9
                                       Name = stras5

    MCC>show snmp .snmp.stras5 all status

    SNMP .snmp.stras5
    AT 25-MAR-1993 09:10:34 Status

    Examination of attributes shows:
                             ipReachability = up

    All the other SNMP registration work correctly.

    Is there a known problem of registering the Director itself as SNMP
    entity (DECmcc/VMS) ?

    Thank you for your replies.

I have the same problem too (posted in a differnet style in note 4735).

It would be interesting which values mcc need for a complete registration.

It is possible to ask some values from the partially registered entity like
ipReachability,interface status,...

What kind of hw-device is stras5 ?

4762.2Is SNMP running?BOEHM::MINTZErik MintzThu Mar 25 1993 06:084
What version of UCX are you using on your director system?
It appears that the SNMP agent on the system is not running.

I am using UCX 2.0 and i have update the snmp_agent.exe file with the lates version
2.0-11.
Correct me when i am wrong, but i read in the snmp conference the the snmp agent
could't be started by a user (like "snmp$startup" or so) the process is automaticly
started when a snmp get request is coming in.

When this is not true you are right because i have no SNMP-process running.

	The partial registration occurred was a soft error and should be
	ignored. To do mib filtering, the SNMP AM makes request to the agent
	for all mibs loaded in the dictionary. The agent should respond with
	a noSuchName error if it does not support the mib. Some agents,
	however, just do not respond causing a time-out and a "No Response
	from Entity" error. The entity is properly registered for all other
	practical purposes.

	If all other operations on the entity are successful, then the
	partial registration message should be ignored. Unfortunately,
	the iconic map pops up an informational message window every time
	you look into an entity, reminding that the entity is partially
	registered and should be re-registered. This can get annoying, and
	sometimes hard to ignore. I agree that something needs to be done
	about it.

	Latest update. This will be fixed in the next release (most
	probably the V1.3 MUP kit).
