4734.0. "Direct FDDI management???" by NEWPRT::SCHOOLER_CH (Cheap? thrill...Jump a horse) Mon Mar 22 1993 02:05

My customer is planning to use PNM 200 and the ELM AM and FM to manage an
FDDI network. Is there any advantage/restrictions to connecting the
DECstation running PNM 200 directly to the FDDI ring. Or, should the
DECstation be on an ethernet segment. The answer is the only objection
to a sale. Any help or advice is appreciated.

4734.1Need the via port qualifier, but...VCSESU::WADEBill Wade, VAXc Systems & Support EngMon Mar 22 1993 12:498
    The ELM AM/FM 1.3 release notes state that DECmcc does not officially
    support access from FDDI controllers on the host DECmcc system.

    You can us the via port qualifier but this qualifier was not supported
    by all the MMs as of 1.2.

4734.2MCC EA routines don't support FDDI adaptersQUIVER::HAROKOPUSMon Mar 22 1993 15:0111
    Bill is correct. The ethernet access routines in the MCC kernel
    do not recognize FDDI controllers. However, using the via port
    qualifier usually works for the Bridge AM, Concentrator AM and
    FDDI AM. The ELM FMs do not support the via port qualifier.

    If you have a choice place the managment station on the ethernet
    for best results

    Hello folks. You should pay more attention to this. Some people
    do not have an option as to were there system is connected, and
    from what I have heard, the VIA PORT does not work with all AM's.
    Also, if I am forced to run Polycenter on one system with a Ethernet
    controller, and one system with an FDDI controller [backup system]
    then habbit of using this product will need to change depending on
    which system I am logged in, and all com files would have to be
    modifed to use the "via port" qualifier if I am using the FDDI host.

    Is it possible to squeeze this into the V1.3 MUP?

The "V1.3 MUP" may be necessary to resolve some problems with threads
packaging on VMS. It would not include new functionality; we would
not be able to support the testing required by functional changes. In
any case, none of the optional packages would be re-releasing for the
update.
