4723.0. "NAT's RMON software/DECmcc now available" by ANNECY::HAGENMULLER (EIC Annecy - dtn 7887.41.99) Fri Mar 19 1993 10:33

The NAT's Digital Support Package to MONITOR NETWORK PERFORMANCES is now
available for use in europe.

The NAT's Digital Support Package is the ULTRIX version of the NAT's NMS soft-
ware which allows to monitor the performances of one or more local or remote
Ethernet segment by using a RMON compliant probe.

This application is a way to provide our customers with functionalities
similar to LTM (plus some additionnal features) with a better DECmcc
integration.

This application is launchable through POLYCENTER DECmcc ULTRIX 1.3 and the
following main features are available :

	- launch of the application with the iconic map menu bar,

	- runs under ULTRIX v4.2 and higher and Motif,

	- provide user-friendly management of all the RMON groups, including
	  a decoding application,

	- provide protocol statistics (not in RMON standard) by using a
	  private MIB extension,

	- report capability by saving data in flat files so that trend
analysis may be produced while using a spreadsheet,

	- traps are managed by DECmcc SNMP AM and displayed in the DECmcc
	  notification window,

This software is available for all Digital european customers (except 2 coun-
tries) via EIC Annecy. For more information please contact the following
persons :

PRODUCT NAME: NAT's Digital Support Package, Version 1.0

     DESCRIPTION

NAT's DIGITAL Support Package version 1.0 provides POLYCENTER
SNMP manager and DECmcc ULTRIX System users with a powerful
and user-friendly solution for managing NAT Ethermeter network
     traffic monitors.

Its features support for the newly developed Remote Network
Monitoring Management Information Base (RMON MIB) standard
and complements the monitoring and management capabilities of
     Digital's network management softwares.

     PRODUCT FEATURES

     o Easy-to-Use RMON Graphical Interface:

The Digital Support Package provides Digital network management
software users with and easy-to-use graphical interface for
managing NAT Ethermeters using RMON MIB. A single version of the
software is able to manage more than one EtherMeter at a time.

A graphical user interface is provided for the RMON MIB groups :
     Statistics,Host,History,Matrix,Alarm,Event,Filter and capture. A
brief description of each of the RMON groups supported is given
     below :

o RMON Host. This feature allows you to observe all active
and inactive nodes monitored on the network, as well as
statistics on incoming and outgoing packets for these
           nodes.

o RMON Statistics. This RMON group allows you to observe
segment-level Ethernet statistics for a particular RMON
device. These statistics include : packets, octets, multi-
casts, broadcasts and collisions on the local segment, as
well as the number of errors.

o RMON History. The RMON History feature provides histor-
ical views of the statistics provided in the Statistics
group, with the exception of packet size distribution
which is provided only on a real-time basis. With the RMON
History feature you can define different sample intervals
and buckets for complete customization of trend analysis.
Samples can be plotted in a histogram.

o RMON Matrix. The RMON Matrix feature analyses "who is
talking to who" on a LAN. The Matrix maintains traffic
statistics for conversations between nodes on a network.
Viewing of statistics can be narrowed down to a source
address, a destination address, or a particular pair of
           addresses.

o RMON Alarm. The RMON alarm feature can be used to peri-
odically take statistical samples from variables in the
device and compare them to previously defined thresh-
olds. If the monitored variable crosses or drops below a
threshold, an alarm is reported and an event is generated.

o RMON Event. The RMON event functionality controls the
generation and notification of events from a device. Log
events generated by network devices can be viewed with the
           RMON Event tool.

o RMON Filter and Capture. The RMON Filter and Capture
application provides packet analysis. With this tool, you
can define what types of packets you want to capture and
how much space you want to allocate for capturing packets.
Once packets are captured, this application will show you
the specific contents of each captured packet. The packet
contents can be viewed in real-time mode or saved in a
           file for later analysis.

The Digital Support Package's packet decoding feature supports
     the following protocols :

TCP/IP: IP, UDP, TCP, ICMP, ARP, RARP, SNMP

           NOVELL IPX/SPX: IPX

DECnet: RL(Routing Layer), NSP, ECL (End Commu-
                              nications LAyer)

Appletalk: LAP, DDP, RTMP, ATEP, NBP, AURP, ADSP,
                              ZIP, ASP, PAP, AFP

           XNS: XNS

     o EtherMeter Graphic Presentation :

NAT's own EtherMeter Zoom and TOP10 functions are presented in a
     graphical user interface.

o EtherMeter Zoom. The Ethermeter Zoom feature displays
overall statistical information for the monitored LAN
segment. This statistical information includes : traffic
volume and performance measurements, packets sizes, errors
and also protocol statistics (protocol statistics are not
part of the RMON standard and therefore are kept in NAT's
           private MIB extensions).

o TOP10. The TOP10 feature is used to examine the most
active nodes on a monitored network segment. The type of
node addresses examined can be chosen from among seven
categories (e.g. Ethernet Talkers, IP Talkers, etc). An
EtherMeter attached to the network segment performs the
           monitoring.

     o Report Capability :

A report function is provided. This useful feature enables to
save RMON data (e.g. statistics, hosts, history, etc) as well as
decoded packets into flats files for further use. This allows
in particular to produce trend analysis by using any of the
     available spreadsheets (EXCEL, LOTUS, etc).

     o Graphical Icon Representation :

NAT EtherMeter can be graphically represented on the Digital
network management platform (both POLYCENTER SNMP manager and
     POLYCENTER DECmcc ULTRIX systems).

All the functions of this software can then be started by se-
lecting the appropriate icon and using the map menu bar.

     o TRAP handling :

Traps sent by the EtherMeter as defined in the Event group of
the RMON are sent to the network management station and handled
correspondly (for example, in case of POLYCENTER DECmcc ULTRIX,
the traps will be received by the SNMP AM, making possibly the
color of the EhterMeter's icon changed, and displayed in the
     notification window).

     HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

     o Management station

Any DECstation with a color monitor and at least the following
disk space and memory capacities :

Disk Space: A minimum of 30 MB

        Memory(RAM): A minimum of 24 MB

The Disk space mentionned above doesn't take into account the
space needed for the report capability which may require larger
amount of space (depending on the type of information saved and
     the frequency of the saving).

As an example, the memory capacity required on a system
running at the same time POLYCENTER DECmcc ULTRIX and NAT's
Digital Support Package is around 32 MB (please refer to the
SPD of the corresponding POLYCENTER application for accurate
        memory requirement)
