4718.0. "Ingres MCC/NM200 questions" by 31270::KOPEC_ST (Seattle WA 206-(DTN545)-637-4207) Thu Mar 18 1993 13:45
Has anyone been able to find out any answers regarding MCC (in particular
NM200)'s future inclusion and support of Ingres/SQL?
We understand the following facts...
1) ULTRIX/SQL is no longer bundled in ULTRIX.
2) Support for ULTRIX/SQL goes away at end of CY93
3) ULTRIX/SQL (also called Ingres/SQL) is now bundled in NM200 starting with
V1.3 which should be shipping March 93.
4) "In the future, Polycenter Historian and Exporter will require a separate
license for Ingres SQL."
#4 is taken from the V1.3 draft SPD. It strongly implies to me and our
customers that we/they will have to go to Ingres in the future for their
dbase software.
Now, the MCC customer sees us
a) dropping Ingres from the ULTRIX distribution,
b) **TEMPORARILY** including it in the NM200 distribution, and
c) wondering when we will decide to drop it once again from
one of our dist kits (this time the NM200 kit)! This of course
will put the burden on either the customer or the acct team to
wait for the second shoe to drop, and will inevitably result in a
period of time when they are missing the new Ingres/SQL software
that they need to do an upgrade.
Again, does anyone have an answer to this imminent situation?
Thank you,
Stan Kopec, NIS/Seattle
PS A second realted question... During the time that we do include
Ingres/SQL in NM200, if a customer has an Ingres/SQL specific problem or
question, I am assuming that they call DEC's CSC in CO since they bought
tel spt for NM200. Is this correct and are there people in the CSC
trained on Ingres, or is there a process in place where they re-route
Ingres questions to Ingres tech spt?

| I must say that I am *DEFINATELY* not a user of Ingres, but since
I am working on trying to fix up the *sample* report package, I
recently received a full set of documentation for Ingres. Currently
this documentation has been taken out of the box and quickly looked
at, but that is just about it.
If someone needs help, I am willing to lend a hand, but realize the
help will be more on the form of the blind leading the blind...
