| Hi Raj,
Thanks for the positive feedback. I wish I could make a definite
statement on the packaging, but in the last few days it is back
up in the air.
It was our intention to ship the alarm manager as an independently
purchaseable kit. This kit would include an extensive knowledge
base (about 100 templates on all entity classes supported in the
EMS kit). But, at this point in time there is now a possibility
that it will be pulled into the V1.4 product. I will keep you posted
on the progress we make.
Just want to put in a quick note, alot of the thanks for the alarm
manager goes to the European support team that originally came up
with the idea and implementation in the Network Services Delivery
Platform for MCC (NSDP). All we did is take the concept and run
with it.

4692.2 | Give away the Alarm Manager - Sell the knowledgebase | CUJO::HILL | Dan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer Resident | Thu Mar 18 1993 00:12 | 16 |
| The alarms manager makes DECmcc easier to use. Ease-of-use is has been
an issue with DECmcc from the beginning. We need better press than we
have been getting.
Provide a few templates to give customers ideas on how valuable a tool
DECmcc can be. Then provide a "knowledgebase" (and I use the term
loosely) of additional alarm rule templates for determining network
problems as a separately priced module.
I am currently using the DELTA function to look for DECnet problems.
With only one alarm rule, I have been able to locate "mis-tuned" nodes.
With a few more rules, I should be able to recommend a solution.
More to come...

4692.3 | request for more opinion | GOSTE::CALLANDER | | Thu Mar 18 1993 09:33 | 24 |
| thanks for the input Dan.
Anyone else with an opinion?
At this point in time we are considering developing a generic tool
which potentially ships with the kit, and then sell the knowledge
base seperately. But, and this is the big one, right now the tool
has apriori knowledge of the knowledge base and how to load it (the
version of the tool currently not publicly available). Changing
this will take time and we need to keep time to market in mind.
More input on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to everyone who has called or sent mail with the positive
feedback. If you see something really missing from the tool please
also pass that along so that we can hopefully generate a truely
useful product. That also means if you have a pet rule which really
helps you out, I would *****LOVE****** for you to send me a copy
of it, or post it here. Please include a description of what is
it used for and what type of device to apply it to.
thanks
Jill
