I'm a bit confused by what the graphing utility is telling me in T1.3.1 for what I would assume should be line utilization. When I click my way through the layers to get to the HDLC link x logical station x on one of our WANrouters, I then ask the graph to give me a STATISTICS display on DATA OCTETS RECEIVED and DATA OCTETS SENT. What I believe I am seeing is a byte count /seconds which I would concider to be a COUNTER display and not a STATISTIC. Now, I would admit that in order to do a STATISTIC on this set of counters, you need to know the line speed. In many cases, the line speed is obtainable through the NCL equivalent of NODE x MODEM CONNECT LINE y ACTUAL SPEED. In the case where line speed is a non-zero number why can't this be used to do a calculation and subsequent display? Where line speed is zero, then another window asking for line speed should solve the problem......no? Comments appreciated. Al

4691.1 | LIne given speed....to use or not to use.....that is the question | LICAUS::LICAUSE | Al Licause (264-4780) | Tue Mar 16 1993 11:55 | 19 |
After working with Brad Woodcock, we realized that MCC does infact give graph utilization figures for the Phase V entity. It was just a bit difficult to find.......and I don't know why I couldn't find it since I found it using NCL......anyway...my error! Howevever, to calculate this figure (octets*8*seconds/linespeed), the actual line speed must be known. It has been pointed out in the WANrouter 500 notes conference that the line speed calculation given by the WANrouters (and perhaps even for the DECnis?) may be inaccurate. There are also cases where the WANrouter does not give a valid line speed number. In such cases or perhaps in all cases, it would be nice if a small window came up to either verify the line speed or ask for one. Perhaps if someone could tell us where the line speed figure is taken from when doing the calculation.? thanks, Al | |||||

I believe that MCC uses the ACTUAL SPEED attribute in its calculations. I am fairly sure that the WANrouter copies the SPEED attribute (which is settable) to the ACTUAL SPEED attribute. DECNIS also does this for W618 lines. For W622 lines the hardware calculates the speed (and gets it wrong!) -- we are working on improvements to that. If you are not using internal clocking then the SPEED attribute does nothing except provide a value for ACTUAL SPEED so if you set it to correspond to the real speed of your line MCC should get the utilisation right (except for WANcontroller 622 lines).
