4659.0. "how to register WANrouter 500 running P4 ?" by COPCLU::VINTHER (Poul Vinther @DMA) Wed Mar 10 1993 05:57

Sorry If this is covered else where, But I am working from site on a
    slow link.

The customer has DECwanrouter 500's running decnet IV extensions.
These boxes only understand NCL (so they are managed using NCL) but run
only DECnet Phase 4. Event logging is directed to the boot node from
    each WANrouter and X.25 gateway.

My question, how can I register the WANrouter as Phase V node if I am
not using DNS and the WAN router only has a Phase 4 address. I tried
to register it as a P4 node but this fails as the box only talks NCL.

2nd question, I have set up event streams from the Boot node to mcc
node, I am getting P4 events ok. BUT I do not get the events created
by P4+ comming up on the mcc node, they look like phase 5 events. They
are seen by OPCOM on the boot node OK.

Any assistance would be appreciated, thanks in advance

If the router only responds to NCL commands, then it's a phase V node.
Register it as such. You don't need DNS to do this, it'll get
registered in the local namespace. If the node you are running mcc on
is a phaseIV node, make sure the router name and address is in the
local database before trying to register it.

For info on setting up phase V event streams, try reading note 4301.12

4659.2got the ncl nodes registerd but events stil no goCOPCLU::PRAKTIKANT3Wed Mar 10 1993 10:0217
Thanks, that did the trick to get the nodes registerd.
tried the things in note 4301.12, but still could only get IV events to
come back from the load host.

Note the load host is running vhase IV etc ncl on that system show obs
are set up correctly, however if I issue the command
ncl> SHOW NODE mcc_node ALL STATUS
I get an error "acces denied"
I looked at netserver.log, this indicates that the NETMAN com file gets
called and gets tothe run cml command.

from the mcc system to the outside world seems to work fine.

I suspect that the boot node events are not seen on the mcc system
because of this can any one verify .....

I'm confused about your setup. Is the "load host" the same system
you're running mcc on? What version of DECnet are these machines
running? Also, let's see how you set up the routers to send back the
phase V events. Do a show of the Outbound stream All Characteristics
and All Status and post the results here.

4659.4will get the data laterCOPCLU::OVESENMichael Ovesen @DMO 857-2739Thu Mar 11 1993 03:238

The load host is NOT the mcc system, mcc is on a VAXstation 4000/90
load host is a MicroVAX 3100 bothe with DECnet Extensions Wave 1

I will post the OBS data for the wan routers here, note we see the
events from the wan router on the load host OK, we see IV events from
the load host comming to the mcc system OK, cant get the V events to
    come to the mcc system.

In your case, the load host doesn't log any Phase V events. Do you mean
that you want the events from the WANrouter to come to MCC? If so, you have
to set up the Outbound Stream entity *on the WANrouter* to point to the MCC
node -- event logging on the load host isn't involved.

If you can be a bit more specific about exactly what you want to see (give
some examples of events you want to receive) then John or I can probably
help you.

4659.6sinking direct from wanrouter to mcc works...HERON::PATEL_ALoLo-AQIC-I82Q-B4IP, - LMFMon Mar 15 1993 09:5122

thanks, that helped. What I was trying to do is have the wan routers
send there events to the boot node, then have the boot node send the
events onto the mcc system. This way I would not have to modify the
    ncl load files etc...

we now see the events coming into the mcc system from the wan routers,
the only way to get this to work was to re compile the image that gets
loaded down to the wan router.

We are still not seeing the events in the notification window. This
however, looks like a problem related to the fact that we are using the
Local MIR not DNS, the nodes have been registered in the local MIR
using lower case. I will try to change the names to upper case etc...

I am now in the office and the local office will take over from here on
    in.

    thanks for all the replies.
