4642.0. "CMIP and/or SNMP?" by STKHLM::BREMSJO (Anders Bremsj, EIS in Stockholm) Fri Mar 05 1993 08:01

    A few questions...

    1. Can anyone give a brief explanation of the pros and cons of CMIP and
    SNMP?

    2. Does any other vendor depend on a CMIP implementation as much as
we do with all our ncl managed networking products?

    3. What do we tell our customers who want to run an IP ONLY network?
How do we manage it using our products (DECnis, WANrouters, Hubs)?

    4. How do we let other vendors management products manage our CMIP
managed products? SNMP cant do it all for our products, or am I wrong?

4642.2SNMP for DECNIS will be improvingCUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentThu Mar 11 1993 14:2619
The DECNIS SNMP agent currently supports MIB II only. Work is underway
on an Extended private MIB. This must happen if the DECNIS is to gain
support in multivendor network environments where management is done
using something other than NCL or DECmcc.

CMIP uses "connection"-based transport protocols like DECnet Phase IV
and DECnet Phase V, but you can also use UDP/IP as a transport via
CMOT (CMIP Over TCP/IP). UDP/IP is "connectionless".

SNMP currently runs over UDP/IP, though SNMP V2 (sometimes called SMP)
will support other protocols, but this isn't done yet.

UDP/IP does not guarantee delivery since it is connectionless. It is,
however, faster than connection-based transport protocols.

My feeling is that CMIP won't begin to take hold until we get faster
processors and faster networks in wide use.
