4637.1 | a painful solution | ANOVAX::COMFORT | Cold iron shackle, ball & chain | Thu Mar 04 1993 11:20 | 17 |
|
There is a way...however painful it is. Heres what I did to satify my
customers requirement of having each european country broken out
individually. I simply broke each group of vectors out of the european
backdrop into separate files. Viewed and named them. Generated
program specs for a program that would resize the datapoints by
percentage (some one else from the customers staff wrote the code in C,
so unfortunately I can't provide access to it) and just re-sized and
viewed the results until the map was an appropriate size. I then found
that the maps would be placed in odd sections of the display, so I
manually edited them and changed the decimal portion of the X and Y
coordinates until the map appeared where I wanted it to.
Ain't it great? :-)

4637.2 | Use AutoCAD and DXF2MAP to get the backdrop | ANTIK::WESTERBERG | Stefan Westerberg DS Stockholm | Thu Mar 04 1993 11:38 | 22 |

Hi, If you have AutoCAD some were you could make your maps in AutoCAD
and then convert them to DECmcc backdrop vector format by using
the DXF2MAP.EXE program.
This is simply done by saving your AutoCAD drawing into DXF format
without any POLYLINE. When you has done this simple execute the
DXF2MAP program and answer the questions.
The DXF2MAP program could be found at:
$ dir combat""::sys$public:dxf2map
Directory COMBAT""::USR:[KIT]
DXF2MAP.EXE;1 5-MAY-1992 16:04:36.00 (RWED,RWED,RE,RE)
Total of 1 file.
Hops this help.

4637.3 | Maps-R-Us | TOOK::R_SPENCE | Nets don't fail me now... | Tue Mar 09 1993 10:53 | 13 |
| Ok, I'll bite.
I am creating individual state map backdrops. They won't be high
resolution though. The same as the US Map.
Which states are needed first?
It is clear that backdrops that fill the default navigation window are
needed. What other scales if any? If the backdrop is smaller than
the navigation window, where should it be located (lower left, center,
upper right, etc)?

4637.4 | State Backdrops available | TOOK::R_SPENCE | Nets don't fail me now... | Mon Mar 15 1993 15:22 | 12 |
| There are a set of individual state vector backdrop files now
available. This first set is scaled to fill the navigation window.
They can be found in:
NETS::USER$NETS:[DECMCC.BACKDROP_MAPS]MCC_statename_LARGE.MCC_BACKDROP
and
TOOK::USER$778:[SURVIVAL.MAPS]MCC_statename_LARGE.MCC_BACKDROP

ps
I am still interested in input as described in the previous reply.

4637.5 | how does one convert from x format to vector ? | HERON::PATEL_A | LoLo-AQIC-I82Q-B4IP, - LMF | Tue Mar 16 1993 03:55 | 12 |
| Is it possible to convert TIFF scanned file formats to vector format,
for tat matter any format to the vector format used by mcc.
Bit maps are ok up to a point, they do not appear in the Navigation
window.
Amrit,
PS looks like the directory spec on NETS:: is not correct in -1.

4637.6 | | SPANKY::SAWYER | | Tue Mar 16 1993 09:55 | 5 |
| You're right, the directory spec is incorrect.
It should be: NETS::USER$NETS:[DECMCC.BACKGROUND_MAPS]
Come on Rob...Let's get on the ball!! ;-)

4637.8 | Directory is fixed. | TOOK::R_SPENCE | Nets don't fail me now... | Tue Mar 16 1993 10:31 | 13 |
| Ok, I fixed the directory spec. I guess thats what happens when you get
old :-)
Don't know of a way to convert bitmaps to vectors. There arn't any
lines in a bitmap, only dots. So there isn't any way to really
determine where the endpoints of the lines are. (note, there are
likely some really sophisticated AI CAD stuff that can analyize
images but I sure don't have it)
The trick is to get the original info in some sort of vector format
then it is possible to convert it to the MCC format.

4637.9 | Regional Backdrops anyone? | TOOK::R_SPENCE | Nets don't fail me now... | Tue Mar 16 1993 11:03 | 8 |
| I have been asked about backdrops for regions. New England comes to
mind as a region (and why not, I live there).
Are regions usefull? Important?
Which regions should I do (name the region and list the states)?

while you're at it ... what about European maps?
For me obviously the most interesting would be
Germany - with regions, of course ;-)
