4571.0. "Looking to view alarms/events via a dial up asci term" by HERON::PATEL_A (LoLo-AQIC-I82Q-B4IP, - LMF) Thu Feb 18 1993 12:32

    My customer is looking for a way to view events and alarms remotely
    from an ASCCI terminal.

    The immediate thought was to log all events etc to a file on a daily
    basis and write a front end to read the log file (there is a slight
    problem that the cuurent log file is write locked) so that a user can
    scan up and down the log file, using a VT style device over a dial up
    line.

    Does any one have a better suggestion, and can someone in engineering
    possibly give an estimate to the work that would be involved to do the
    above ?

    help much appreciated.

4571.1Why not using TeMIP ?TAEC::FLAUWFri Feb 19 1993 02:5114
re: .0

	Amrit,

	If you are running on Ultrix, then why don't you use TeMIP ?

	As TeMIP is storing all filtered alarms in Operation context and all
	filtered OSI events and alarms in Logs, it is providing the ability
	to scan events and alarms collected from the FCL PM. The user will even
 	be able to specify search criteria to limit the scope of the search.

	Best regards,

	Marc.
4571.2VCS/ENS?WOTVAX::HATTOSI think, Therefore I'm paid lessMon Feb 22 1993 12:336
    Amrit,

    Have a word with Ian Smyth @REO. He fires his events/alarms into
    VCS/ENS which is capable of doing what you want.

4571.3required for VMS and must use MCC as GUIHERON::PATEL_ALoLo-AQIC-I82Q-B4IP, - LMFMon Feb 22 1993 15:1810
    re .1

    alassssss this is a VMS implementation -- but thanks anyway

    re .2 that's probably workable, but the customer believes the marketing
    jargon :=), and want's every thing via MCC

    thanks to both

4571.4some options for viewing ascii eventsGOSTE::CALLANDERMon Mar 15 1993 17:2824
    how much data (for what period of time) does he want to view?

    There are a few options available depending upon your reponse.

    1) if he wants to scroll through real time events, then use the
    FCL forms mode which gives him a 500 line buffer for events being
    received.
    		use mode forms
    		notify domain xxx events=(yyy), ent list=(zzz)

    2) if he wants to look at the same events he is viewing from his
    iconic map interface, them turn on logging from the iconic map
    notification services window. The logging of events is done by writing
    the events (a selection of formats is supplied) to an ascii file.
    How often the file is closed and a new one opened are settable
    parameters, along with how many versions of the file are to be
    permitted. These files can be viewed through any standard editor.

    3) Start up and FCL process that utilizes the TO FILE qualifier
    on the notify command. This FCL process can be submitted via a
    batch job and the output viewed through any standard editor.

    Hope this helps some.
