4541.0. "TL1 string?" by DPDMAI::DAVIES (Mark, SCA Area Network Consultant) Sun Feb 14 1993 14:21

A manager at a customer site asked me the following about DECmcc BMS:

"Can it take as imput a TL1 string and turn it into MIB format via a
    Proxy Agent?"

I don't know what a TL1 string is and neither did he (manager type).

    Any thoughts on this?

    Thanks,

    Mark

Tl1 is a message syntax defined by Bellcore. It consists essentially in
preformatting ASCII messages in some sort of genertic manner.
It does not go all the way and for each particular device the specific
aspects have to be defined so as to get the complete messages set
    (protocol).

To some extent it may be compared to the ISO CMIP which proposed a
generic approach to management messages in an other context.

So what you are looking for is essentially a translationmechanism
that converts ASCII type messgaes to MIB formats.

    That must be done
    - at specification level (to populate the MIB)
    - at runtime with the approrpriate conversion mechanism and routines

I don't know what are the current plans for the CA in this domain but
I would think that such a function typically sits within the MOM.
