4486.0. "Event info in notification window lacks detail" by CSOADM::ROTH (You like it, it likes you!) Tue Feb 02 1993 09:41

When a SNMP link down trap is received and I have a rule firing, the
message that appears in the event window looks like this:

        critical 1234 SNMP BBSOC1 linkDown
critical 1235 SNMP BBSOC1 Rule SNMP_LINKDOWN has fired

This is less than helpful as it does not tell me, in useable terms, what
link has gone down. If I double-click on one of these lines in the event
window I can then see the ifIndex number that basically tells me what
interface on the SNMP box went down. Still, not usable information from
a 'real world' standpoint.

Is there any way to have the notification window (or the subsequent
Notification Detail window) give a 'real world' indication such as
'Link to Dallas'? Creating a separate rule for each link is not really
desirable in this situation.

Thanks-

Lee

currently the quickest thing that comes to mind is to have
the rule action procedure scan the data and translate the
index->interface->text and then use the data collector to
pass the event into mcc against just what you want it to
be. If you do this you would want to have the rule in
another unmonitored domain, or modify your notify command
so that it isn't looking for the rule events so that you don;t
get the info twice (rule and collector). There are a number
of people out there doing similar things for different conditions
already. Maybe one of them can give you some additional pointers
on how they set similar types of rules (on other conditions) up.

We setup a procedure who read the traps received from Cisco boxes
in a WAN, translates the Ifindex field contained in the trap-info
and send an event to the collector featuring a pointTopoint connection
between two sites. It's raw but it works !!

If this can help any of you drop me a line.
