I am having two questions regarding SNMP. 1. Is it possible to define string variables in MIB definitions? For example: Suppose I have defined an SNMP entity and I can ask that entity for its status. So I give the command: SHOW SNMP XYZ status and I want the response to be one of: -"XYZ is up" -"XYZ is down" -"The status of XYZ is undetermined" how would the MIB definition look like ? 2. What is the use, and where can I find some more info on SNMP proxy agents? Thanks Timo

What you are saying is perfectly possible. Look into RFCs 1155 (SMI) and 1212 (concise mib format) to get more information on how to write mibs. If I had some spare cycles, I could have provided you with a simple example. The Simple Book authored by Marshall Rose has a section on proxy agents. I might be wrong, but I don't think any RFCs have been written regarding proxy agents. There have been discussions around proxy agents elsewhere in this notes conference which might be helpful to you. Rahul. | |||||

We have done all what you are asking for (modifying a Mib (and the agent as well) to get something more meaningfull than only indexes and using a proxy agent). And Rahul helped us to solve some issues. Feel free to get in touch with us if you have a project with a customer. Christophe. |
