4452.0. "Cabletron and Cisco anyone...?" by HERON::TIMMERMANS () Tue Jan 26 1993 11:09

We are in the process of proposing a centralised network mgt platform to a
large Customer; the platform would requires management capabilities for Netview,
GDC Megaview, DECnet, Cabletron and Cisco objects.

Netview and Decnet are addressed by existing AMs
The GDC Megaview has lower priority, this could be solved by specfic AM
development .

One of the hotter points is the Cabletron and Cisco boxes; those are an
absolute mgt requirement.
Some questions here:

Does the CISCO/8.3 MiB allow "management" in the sense that you can not only
display attribute values but also set them as required?

The Cabletron hubs that will be used are managed by Cabletron's LANVIEW, is
there any SVP development planned/going on aiming at CAbletron hub management
using either launched application or AM ?

Major competition here comes from Cabletron with their LanView and SPECTRUM/
Bluevision offering.

Thanks for your help,
Luc

Watch out - cabletron typically GIVES AWAY Spectrum to win hub
business. Their bluevision option is getting good reviews. As for
your cisco question - NO, to set up a cisco box, you still need to
TELNET into the box and run specific applications to set it up. There
is a product called ciscoworks which makes this transparent, which is
available on most non-dec systems - we're working on getting it on DEC.
While you are looking at integrating other things, consider the script
MM and event collector as well as full AM develoment. There are
actually 10 ways in all to integrate with MCC - some easier than
    others.
