Though I do not have an answer, I can say that I have just completed a
test of X w/ TCPIP transport from VAX UCX V2.0 to VAX UCX V2.0 using
the iconic map interface w/ MCC V1.1 and have experienced no problems.
Also at my customer, we use X-served iconic maps to PCs on a regular
basis, however we use DECnet and eXcursion. This is with MCC V1.2
iconic map. Other than some known bugs in link disconnection from
eXcursion, we experience no problems. I will check to see if eXcursion
supports the IP transport and if it does, give it a test.

4423.2 | You do need an X Window Server on your PC | TOOK::BMURRAY | | Thu Jan 21 1993 14:51 | 10 |

Re: .0
Dave (.1) is right. You need an MS Windows based X Window System Server
running on your PC, such as eXcursion, to be able to display the IMPM on
your PC.

Re .1 & .2 -
Many thanks for that. Unfortunately the customer who does not have eXcursion
is evaluating OpenView <-> DECmcc and can only get the OpenView iconic
display on his PC.
I assume the bottom line is if eXcursion is not being used, despite the fact
the PC in question has MS Windows we can not support them.

4423.4 | can you get more info? | ANOSWS::COMFORT | Cold iron shackle, ball & chain | Fri Jan 22 1993 11:01 | 11 |

Not necessarily eXcursion, just a valid X server package that supports
the MIT X window system version 11 spec. MSwindows is *NOT* an X
server. You will need to find out if the OpenView is using TCP/IP and
X (Motif) or if is using NETBIOS and MSwindow calls imbedded in a
transport (be it TCP/IP, DECnet, LanManager, etc). If it is the former
configuration, make sure that you have the latest MOTIF for VMS on your
system (the correct one is the one that replaces DEC windows
completely). Is the open view system a UN*X implementation or a PC?

One more thing, OpenView does not do DECnet, at least as of the last
article I read. This puts it at a grave disavantage in a DEC
environment. OpenView will not manage DECbridges or non-smnp terminal
servers either, to my knowledge.

4423.6 | OpenView/DECnet | LEMAN::JOSHI | Faster than a Tachyon, but easier to find.. | Tue Jan 26 1993 10:50 | 8 |
| ref .5:
OpenView does DECnet.. Not very well but they do DECnet. They (HP) have
demonstrated that to one of our largest customer.
But we can beat OpenView for now.. we have to be a little clever about it...
(SVP programs, AM's, etc.., Human Interfaces etc.. better produce
better results though..)

I have realized that I was referring to an article I read reviewing a
network management product, but it was not from HP. I think it may
have been from Sun (?). I mixed up the information and I apologize for
I certainly do not mean to mislead.
Sorry,
