1) Will all DECnet IV mechanism developed in the first platform (ie
DECnet IV, MIR Namespace) to monitor DECnet nodes in asynchonous mode
(using events sent by local DECnet IV router), be compatible on the
second platform (ie DECnet V, DNS Server Full Function) ?
You won't be able to monitor DECnet phaseIV events from the
phaseV node with DECmcc V1.2.3. You *will* be able to do this
in V1.3 which is in field test right now. This is because the
DECnet phaseIV EVL doesn't run in a phaseV environment and
support for phaseIV relayed events in the phaseV EVL wasn't
available in V1.2.3 . So, if you want to monitor phaseIV events
in this environment you'll have to run MCC on one of the phaseIV
systems until V1.3 ships. I'm not sure what you're asking about the
namespaces. DNS provides all the features that the local MIR has
so whatever you were doing with the MIR you should be able to do
using DNS.
2) In the SPD of DECmcc, the prerequisite DECnet product seems to
be DECnet/ULTRIX (DNP420). Is it possible to use DECmcc/BMS V123 with
DECnet/ULTRIX Extended Function (DNP510), and using both DECnet IV
Access Module AND DECnet/OSI Access Module ?
Yes, you can use DECmcc on a DECnet phaseV system.
Both the DECnet phaseIV and phaseV access modules were written
so that they can operate in either DECnet environment.

4386.2 | How to get DNS only from phase V subsets? | SUBWAY::AMMU | | Thu Jan 14 1993 10:47 | 4 |
| One of the problems I had was, on ultrix dns comes only with decnet
phase V. I installed phase iv, and then I wanted to use DNS , tried to
pickup dns only from PHASE V subsets, it failed saying decnet already
installed. Any work around?

Hi John,
And thank you for your reply.
So, I will configured my platfom with the following products :
. ULTRIX V4.3
. DECnet/ULTRIX V4.2 (kit DNP420)
. DNS Full Function (ie Server, from kit DNP510)
. DECmcc/BMS V1.2.3
Nevertheless, I have more questions :
1) DECnet/ULTRIX and DECnet/OSI for ULTRIX have the same UPI on the
CDROM NOV.92. What about the license/PAK ?? Is this the same PAK
(product DECNET-ULTRIX), or are there two different PAKs ?
2) Do we need a PAK for DNS server ?
Thank you for you reply.
Regards,
Renato

| I don't think you can configure your system to be PhaseIV DECnet
and have DNS. Perhaps the DNS notes conference or DECnet Ultrix
notes conference can answer that for certain. The same goes for
the question about PAKS. But my feeling is that the configuration
you are proposing may not work.
What I was trying to suggest in my first reply was that if you had
a mixed environment where you had some phaseIV nodes and some
phaseV nodes, and you were interested in receiving events from both,
then until DECmcc V1.3 comes out you must set up your MCC director
on one of the phaseIV nodes so that both the DNA4 and DNA5 EVL can run.
In V1.3 the DNA5 EVL can field and process both phaseV *and* phaseIV
relayed events so you could then move your MCC environment over to the
phaseV system.

4386.5 | so... which DECnet/ULTRIX version ??? | ZTOIS1::VISTA | Renato VISTA, SIS Strasbourg, France | Thu Jan 14 1993 12:00 | 14 |

John,
I will try to solve the PAK problem.
Futhermore, if there are ONLY Phase IV nodes to manage on my network,
is it possible to have a DECnet PHASE IV node as MCC Director using DNS
Server (V2.0), on ULTRIX V4.3 ?
What about the DECnet/ULTRIX version ???

4386.6 | No DNS with DECnet IV | TOOK::MINTZ | Erik Mintz | Thu Jan 14 1993 12:00 | 7 |
| There is no way to run DECdns on an ULTRIX system unless that system
has all of DECnet/OSI installed. DECdns makes calls to DECnet
through an interface that is only provided in DECnet/OSI.
So it is NOT possible to use the DNS code from the DECnet/OSI
kit on a DECnet phase IV system.
