4372.0. "remote X and MAP problem" by ANOSWS::COMFORT (Cold iron shackle, ball & chain) Mon Jan 11 1993 12:56

    Hi,

I would like to ask if anyone has seen the following behaviour around
    the DECmcc Iconic Map PM.

    We have a VAXstation 4000 mdel 60 w/ 104 meg memory. I run detached
MCC and two exporter jobs and ~170-200 rules, 150 or so of which are
polling rules running every 5 minutes.

When we boot up the system, I submit two batches that bring up two maps
(the system is dual headed), each opening a different domain. Then
various persons will submit batches that create a map window on their
workstation, be it a PC, Risc/Un*x or VAX.

This works great, we can get 6 maps or so running before memory starts
to become an issue. And the system will hum along for a week or two.
Eventually, the remote maps get disconnected, especially by PC that get
shut off, so one will have to re-create the Xdisplayed map. What
happens is that without warning, Xdisplays of the map will not happen.
The network link comes up, the man/ent/int=decw process shows 10s of
thousands of I/Os and page faults and everything appears to function
normally, except no map. Other X applications work great, ie. Clock,
Cardfiler, Create/Term/Detach. The only way to correct this situation
seems to be a complete system reboot. I have tried restarting
DECwindows, to no avail. When this does happen, entering line mode is
    still operational.

    Any one have any ideas?
