4327.1 | better answer requries better question. | TOOK::MCPHERSON | pre-retinal integration | Mon Jan 04 1993 09:18 | 18 |

Yes, Probably.
Seriously, a better answer than that would require a more detailed description
of what each of these items *means*, specifically:
> * Rearrangement and change management
> * Use assistance
> * Resource inventory, resource accounting, resource acquisition
If you would describe each of these items including examples, I'm sure someone
would be able/willing to point you to the right info....

You're free to use your imagination !!! Just to limit the scope, I
tried to clarify what I meant with:
> * Rearrangement and change management
Rearrangement and change management primarily respond to the activities
of moving users, systems or other equipment. An ideal system might not
only be capable of managing the change for data networks, application
parameters and name services, but also for telecommunications
facilities such as telephones, PBXs and long distance accounts.
> * User assistance
There are certain additional requirements having to do with user
satisfaction, correlating all parameters relevant to a user. Think
about a help desk on a multi-vendor environment.
> * Resource inventory, resource accounting, resource acquisition
There are inventory issues at every level of the network function.
Ideally there should be a coherent database defining network entities,
including hardware, software, users and parameters, with information
about new or changed entities automatically updated. Other special
requirements include hardware and software audit, being able to do
automatic service calls, generate billing for the organization BU's,
etc.

4327.3 | passing your note along | GOSTE::CALLANDER | | Mon Jan 04 1993 14:38 | 7 |
| a lot of these ideas have been discussed by the NMA group, at this
time there is no inventory control system available for MCC (and
developed by Digital). As to the needs you state, I am in complete
agreement and will pass these along as requirements to our product
management. What I will note is that you can do some of these things
using the tools we provide you but it will require work on your
part to set it up and make it work.

| You might want to look at the following notes files:
VINO::SYSTEM_CENSUS
SNAX::TARGET_HOTLINE
The System Census software has a module for DECmcc, but does not appear to
require it. It seems to be targetted a asset/system management.....have the
software, but haven't installed it yet.
Target Hotline is a third party product for trouble ticketing, trouble tracking
that is independent, but has an MCC module also.
There were also some efforts internally to develop specific asset managment/
tracking systems that had network components and in one case had an MCC
module, but I don't recall their location or their current status.
You might want to contact Norma Knight, who was the product manager of one
of these tools.
Hope this helps.

4327.5 | IBS = I don't know it, But it's Somewhere out there | FRAIS::ORCHIS::MAASS | Information, that's all I need... | Wed Jan 20 1993 14:36 | 22 |
| Hi Mauricio,
there's a group in Valbonne doing development on a solution they call BUILDINGma-
nager, which appears to be even another strategic architecture for managing the
whole universe :-|, though they have some good ideas. They are now starting to
market this as a customized tool bundled with services in Europe.
The whole thing is called IBS (Integrated Building Services) and I don't know if
Engineering is aware of it. Anyway, if you want more information, try to drop
Patrice Dore @VBO or Mike Duffy @VBO (Product Manager)
a line.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards
Josch
