I have a Digital guy out in Canada with a customer running DECmcc V1.2 on a Vaxstation 3100 model 76 w/SPX. MCC performance is very poor. They have 32 MB of memory, which I believe is the maximum for that cpu. I looked at the SPD and it states that the above model is supported. However, the recommended configartion is a Vaxstation 4000 VLC with 24 MB of memory and an RZ25 disk. It looks to me that the SPD is not telling the whole story or the customer has hit a limitation with his cpu that can't be remedied without getting a better cpu and more memory.. Any thoughts out there on what needs to be done? Thanks, RO

There were lengthy arguments as to what exactly the "minimum" configuration represented in the SPD should represent. What went out in the V1.2 SPD was literally a minimum. That is, if you have a smaller system, don't expect the system to work at all. However, if you select the minimum system, you get minimum performance and capacity. On any more than a tiny network, a larger machine is appropriate. The V1.3 SPD will require a larger minimum system, and will have an explicit warning against recommending bounded memory systems (at least last time I saw a draft). What kind of a load is this particular customer trying to run (ie number of alarm rules, exports, etc)? Has mcc_audit.com been run on the system (perhaps it is out of tune)? Are any other large products running on the system (eg DNS server)? |
