4261.0. "T1.3...Great job" by CLARID::HOFSTEE (E(nterprise)=MC) Wed Dec 16 1992 08:51

In these hard times with all its negative news, problems, bug reports etc. let
me add some positive note. I just installed T1.3 without any problem and it
has been running very fine and smooth for the last day. It looks very slick and
it looks a lot better than V1.2 !! Good job!
Just one small nit: I noticed some 'non-intuitive' behaviour of the usage of
the MB1,2,3 buttons. For example, to place an icon on the map, I select it in
the toolbox (with MB1 I think), but than have to place it on the map with the
non-intuitive MB2 button. Also , to move an icon, I have to use MB2 instead
of MB1 and the same for line drawings. Popup menu is attached to MB3 instead
of the more 'standard' MB2 (I thought it was MOTIF standard).
Besides these minor things...great job !!!

4261.1Perhaps some textual help messages...CUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentWed Dec 16 1992 15:5027
    I have experienced the same thing with regard to the T1.3.0 user
    interface. It seems we have a difference of opinion regarding what it
    intuitive and what isn't.

    For example, to change an icon on the map, you must place the mouse
    pointer on the icon to change, then click MB3 to get the pop-up menu
    with the "Change icon..." menu item activated. You may then change the
    icon. You do NOT have to select the icon first, as some might
    intuitively deduce. Once you understand the behavior, you actually
    "save" a click when you want to change an icon. From this standpoint,
    I like the implemented behavior better.

    From my point of view, one thing that might be helpful to "enhance" to
    intuitiveness of the user interface would be simply to add a one line
    directional message in an "intuitively appropriate" place that tells
    the user to:

    	"Hold down MB2 to move icon..."

    "Balloon help" pop-up windows (see Macintosh System 7 help) that are
    activated as you move your pointer across each menu item would help
    immensely. Each balloon help window would explain what each command
    does.

    Be sure, though, that you can turn off the balloon help.
