4247.0. "wind.mgr. crashes with accvio,looking into bridge" by MUNICH::SCHWEMMER () Mon Dec 14 1992 11:17

We've a problem at customer-side with crashing window-manager by looking into
the Forwarding database of a bridge.

The system is a VS3100, 76 (SPX) with VMS V5.5, MOTIF V1.1,
DECmcc BMS V1.2.2 and Bridge AM V1.2.1.

The customer looks into the Forwarding database of the bridge by using
the Iconic Map-Interface (he clicks on the corresponding symbols).
The output of the forwarding database is coming, but the window manager
crashes with ACCVIO (it happens with MOTIF 1.0 or MOTIF 1.1).

We couldn't find the reason, have checked the relevant quotas, but it was
not reproducible inhouse.
Customer can reproduce it always.

As a workaround the customer has switched to 'use icon box'. The effect
was, that the accvio didn't happen any more.

'use icon box' means, that customer now uses the following mwm resource file
decw$mwm.dat:

	Mwm*useIconBox: True
	Mwm*iconBoxSBDisplayPolicy:     vertical
	Mwm*iconDecoration:      activelabel label image
	Mwm*iconBoxGeometry:    14x1+0+865
	Mwm*iconPlacement:       bottom right
	Mwm*iconImageMaximum:   50x50

My questions are:

- Has somebody an explanation for this behaviour?

- Because MCC V1.2 obviously isn't written for a MOTIF-surface, is it
  necessary to use XUI-window-manager or is there anything else to follow?

Any help would be appreciated,

thanks in advance,

Mathilde Schwemmer, DSC Munich

4247.1Motif V1.1 bug -mwm dies when lots of windows upCUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentWed Dec 16 1992 15:309
    We have seen this bug and have mentioned it to the Motif developers.

    It appears when 15+ windows are active. DECmcc uses many windows. I
    have found the problem most often when using the SNMP AM and looking
    into the CHIPCOM MIB after I have many windows open.

    I will likely submit a QAR when I have more info on the subject.

4247.2how does mcc use icons?MUNICH::SCHWEMMERWed Dec 23 1992 09:1351
    Thanks for your answer, but mwm crashed again.

    With using icon box it worked just for three days. Customer ensured,
    that he didn't make any changes on the system.
    It already happens when there are only 3 windows open.

    Now, we advised him to use XUI window manager. Works, till now.

    I have cross-posted this problem in BULOVA::DECWINDOWS-conference,
    entry 3432.

    The answer is simultaneously a question.

    Could somebody give an answer to the following questions?
    - how MCC use icons and
    - whether it uses any non-ICCM compliant X protocols,
      particularly any XUI-only properties (with "DEC" in the name)?

MCC should work with the Motif window manager. I'm not sure what
effect using an icon box would have. How does MCC use
icons? Does it use any non-ICCCM compliant X protocols, particularly
any XUI-only properties (with "DEC" in the name).

Are you running the same version of the display server in-house as the
customer?

4247.3Same problem seen with 15+ windows and look into ChipmibCUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentTue Jan 12 1993 01:165
    I have also seen this problem. It may be a problem with Motif, yet I
    can only duplicate it with many windows, running decmcc, and looking
    into a large MIB.
