4238.1 | Only specific AM | TOOK::MINTZ | Erik Mintz | Fri Dec 11 1992 12:59 | 7 |
| Unfortunately, the current PA FM is not generic. Rather, it has specific
code to deal with statistics for each of the AMs which it supports.
The only way to get support for a new AM in the PA FM is to modify the code
in the FM. There is nothing that can be done in an AM.

| RE: .1,
Thanks for the info. This is what I thought but I was not sure.
Any chance of getting something more generic into the next version?

4238.3 | Don't know | TOOK::MINTZ | Erik Mintz | Fri Dec 11 1992 13:57 | 4 |
| The PA FM does not belong to the frameworks group (EMF) so I'll
have to let someone else answer the futures question.

4238.4 | PA could be Generic - How important is it ? | 2582::ROBERTS | Keith Roberts - Network Management Applications | Sat Dec 12 1992 19:51 | 15 |
| I would like to see PA extended to allow the MM developer (and end
user) to create statistics just like you create alarm rules. This
would eliminate the hard-coded information in PA, and allow for generic
statistics across *any* management module.
The bad news - although this has been on *the-list* since DECmcc was
started many years ago, the PA project was never properly staffed to
get it accomplished. Keeping with that tradition, you probably won't
see a Generic PA for the next release (after v1.3), but maybe for the
release after that (?)
Is a Generic PA product important to you (Had to ask - of course it
is). Please make you needs known ... the squeeky wheel sometimes wins.

4238.5 | Sounds like Phase 0 input on MCC V1.4 | BLUMON::SYLOR | Architect = Buzzword Generator | Mon Dec 14 1992 11:58 | 5 |
| the MCC V1.4 phase 0 is open, you can ask for a generic PA FM and help
prioritize it. Contact Bill Gassman and send him your cards and letters.
As Keith implied, it's on the list

4238.6 | Many ways to skin this cat... | 2582::MOLAR::BRIENEN | Network Management Applications! | Wed Dec 16 1992 10:41 | 13 |
| Yes, please get any short-term (V1.4) requirements to Bill Gassman.
Note that there are several ways to provide the "generic" PA
capabilities that are less elegant (less functional, less resource-
intensive: in engineers and cpu cycles) than full-blown alarms-like
definition of Statistics.
Example: Would providing a template of required information (tables
to fill in, possibly re-linking PA itself) to add statistics be
acceptible? This would probably be too complex for the average user,
but an AM developer could supply the necessary information...
