4205.0. "TSAM alarms problem " by SNOC01::MISNETWORK (MCC=My Constant Confusion) Mon Dec 07 1992 20:39

TSAM has raised its ugly head again, with similar problem to that described in
previous notes, but just different enough to be a pain. This problem is being
seen on our local production system and also at a customer site, both using
BMS V1.2, TSAM V1.0.2.

Locally we have 12 MUXserver alarms polling every 80 seconds for change in
link status, 6 looking for link up, 6 looking for link down, on a total of 4
MUXserver 300s. I have enabled the alarms via FCL so as to detect any problems.
Every now and then ( normally every couple of days ), the alarms fall asleep
without any obvious reason. I check the "TIME OF LAST EVALUATION" of all the
alarms, and find that they all stop at the same time, they are still enabled
and running. To restart the alarms, the normal process is to disable them,
exit the current FCL session, enter a new FCL session and restart the alarms.
Sometimes this is not enough, you have to restart the TERMSERVER_AM. Before
doing this, I have looked at all the different processes, and found that they
are all running fine, no RWMBX states, the MCC_TS_AM_SRV was in LEF state.

Any ideas to this frustrating problem !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The customer has the same problem, but with an extra twist. We found that if
we were running export jobs for a couple of DECnis, then there is no way we
could restart the alarms successfully, they would say they were "in progress",
but would never complete an evaluation. As soon as we killed the exporter jobs,
including the background job bingo, the alarms could be started. The export
jobs are as follows -

MCC> show export node * hdlc link * export target mcc_exp_rdb_file

I don't have any ideas for you, other than to stretch out the time
interval for the alarms from 80 seconds. Check with the CSC also.
I imagine they know more about alarms than I do.

It is obvious that TSAM has got some sort of problem, you are not
the only one to report it. The only other person working on Terminal
Server network management in my group got laid off this week, and
I just don't have the time right now.

I'm not at all clear on how this relates to the second problem you
are reporting for a customer site.

Sorry,

Dave
