4186.0. "Register node4 fails after move of DNS-server" by BACHUS::FOLENS () Thu Dec 03 1992 06:54
I have a problem with the register node4 command.
mcc> register node4 .aeb.a.vs031 synonym aebw31
Unable to register name, problem while accessing the namespace.
I can inquire all the entity's in all domains and I can even register
domains. I tried to register a fake station and I got only the message
it was only partial registered, but no namespace error.
When I do a create object from the DNS prompt I get the following:
DNS> crea obj tester
Object class? decnet
Class version? 3.4
%SYSTEM-F-ACCVIO, access violation, reason mask=!XB, virtual address=!XL,
PC=!XL
%SYSTEM-F-ACCVIO, access violation, reason mask=!XB, virtual address=!XL,
PC=!XL
But the object exists.
I renamed the dns$global_cache.gbl and rebooted the system but the
problem remains.
The problem appeared after moving the DNS-server to another node.
The DNS-patch is installed and the old DNS-server has been deleted.
The DNS_default_file.dat has been updated on the DECmcc node.
I have included the log of the register command with logmask= 7fe00000.
Any hints?

4186.1 | Try DNS support? | TOOK::MINTZ | Erik Mintz | Thu Dec 03 1992 07:12 | 11 |
| I'm afraid that this is a pure DNS problem, and it is unlikely that
the DECmcc experts will be able to help you here.
The origin of the problem is the error you are getting from DNS.
The MCC error is just telling you that when MCC tried to contact
DNS, it received an error as well.
I would suggest running this past someone in a better position to support DNS
(perhaps a DNS notes conference?)

4186.2 | Register station works. | BACHUS::FOLENS | | Thu Dec 03 1992 07:37 | 7 |
| Meanwhile I have registered an existing station with succes which
means I'm able to do register and make use of DNS.
I've also created a domain without problems.
I will post entry .0 also in the DNS notesfile.

4186.3 | Solved by removing child pointers. | BACHUS::FOLENS | | Tue Dec 08 1992 08:22 | 9 |
| The problem was caused by the subdirectories %x0001 --> %x003f that
were not copied to the new dns-server.
As the old server was removed I needed to remove the child pointers
to be able to recreate these directories with mcc_dns_setup.
After this all node4's needed to be deregistered and registered again
to enter the backtranslation links.
