4129.0. "CABLETRON & ASN1 description pb" by ZTOIS1::VISTA (Renato VISTA, SIS Strasbourg, France) Mon Nov 23 1992 13:45
Hi,
I'm working on a DECmcc/ULTRIX/BMS V1.2.0. I want to manage CABLETRON
IRM2 Management Board.
When I do the following command :
MCC>show SNMP plm0csh1 cabletron commsDevice commonP * all attr
...I get...
SNMP plm0csh1 cabletron commsDevice commonP (1,1)
AT 1992-11-18-17:36:13.996 All Attributes
commonP_Index = ( 1,
1 )
portIndex = 1
portMediaType = 176
portAdminState = on
portSourceAddr = -- Attribute Not Gettable
...More than 500 instances are expected...Nevertheless, portSourceAddr
variable returns no data.
Then, I use the mcc_tcpip_mq utility, ie :
FOR BOARD 1, PORT 1 (IRM2 front port), Variable portSourceAddress,
Datatype OCTETSTRING, please note that :
- portSourceAddress is not an occurrance description
- there is an unexpected index (datatype Integer)...reaching a
value overflow (255 to 0 !!!). This overflow provokes an error.
Object ID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.52.1.2.2.4.1.4.1.1.1. (1,1), HW Address 1
Value = 8 0 2b 1d a9 8
Object ID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.52.1.2.2.4.1.4.1.1.2. (1,1), HW Address 2
Value = 0 0 a3 a0 5 2
Object ID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.52.1.2.2.4.1.4.1.1.3. (1,1), HW Address 3

...
Object ID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.52.1.2.2.4.1.4.1.1.254. (1,1), HW Address 254
Value = aa 0 4 0 af 84
Object ID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.52.1.2.2.4.1.4.1.1.255. (1,1), HW Address 255
Value = aa 0 4 0 53 4
Object ID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.52.1.2.2.4.1.4.1.1.0. Counter reset to ZERO !!!
Value = 0 0 c 2 9f 7a
Request id: 1 Error number: 2 Error index: 1
------------------------------------------------
Request id: 1 Error number: 2 Error index: 1
------------------------------------------------
... A LOT (!!) OF SAME MESSAGES...
Request id: 1 Error number: 2 Error index: 1
------------------------------------------------
Request id: 1 Error number: 2 Error index: 1
------------------------------------------------
In conclusion, the question is :
Is a normal way of using ASN1 final variable (no occurrance description
expected) by CABLETRON private MIB & remote IRM2 Agent, sending to the
portSourceAddr (datatype OCTETSTRING) variable more than one instance
of HW address ?
Is it a snmp/mcc_tcpip_mq (or other NMS platform) of indexing by
default with an index (datatype integer [0..255]) during such a SNMP
query ?
Thank you for your replies.
Renato
PS : NAT/NMS PC-based software has the same behavior and meets the same
kind of problem.
