4086.0. "MB2 expand field questions." by CSC32::T_MILTON (Ted Milton) Fri Nov 13 1992 17:05

    	Under version 1.2 BMS is there any way to enhance the expanded
    	field information which is available when adding entities to the
    	map? Where are the expand field default values stored? I am
    	asking this as it seems like the expand field usually is blank
    	and would be a nice way to make the IMPM more friendly to
    	novice users.

Ted,

The way a field is expanded depends on the datatype of the attribute or
argument. If it is an enumeration we list the choices in a list box. If
it is a set of or sequence of we allow the user to add another field or
enter the entire value in one long field (like FCL). For many other
datatypes, we sily allow a larger edit area.

Default values are retrieved from the dictionary. If there is a default
value in the dictionary for the attribute, the popup menu entry is selectable.

I am not sure if I answered your question. If not, be more specific about
what you desire.

Hope this helps,
Verna
4086.3But how?RDGENG::PRATTThu Nov 19 1992 09:0014
Verna,

Is it possible to add user-defined entries into the dictionary for MB2
definitions? A possible example of where this would be useful would be when you
create an alarm rule - I would like to create a default template for some of the
alarm rule fields eg. batch queue, alarm procedure, exception procedure, etc.
Having these defined in the dictionary would be useful, then people could use
MB2 to select the required input. It gets very repetitive (and time consuming)
having to enter the same basic information when creating alarms.

There are other instances when having user-defined MB2 options that would be
useful, but alarms is the one that readily springs to mind.

There are better solutions to the alarm rule problem.
What is really needed is a package that allows you do define
"template" alarm rules and apply them to various entities.
I know of at least one such package (elsewhere in the notes file)
and another in the works.

Searching for the note is left as a excersize for the reader,
as I use XNOTES from ultrix which does not have a search function
theat works...
