4079.0. "alarm rule software logic error detected" by CSC32::W_MCGAW () Thu Nov 12 1992 16:32

Hi

I have a customer getting the following mail message (intermittently)
which is generated by the alarm rule that follows the mail message.
I can not see anything wrong with the implementation of the alarm
rule. Is there something I am missing or is it a possible bug?

Thanks,
Walt

4079.1Is the rule on a Wellfleet Router ?NANOVX::ROBERTSKeith Roberts - Network Management ApplicationsFri Nov 13 1992 09:4110
  There was a problem found in a wellfleet router .. when there are a lot
  of data requests on the router, it will return bad data to the SNMP AM.
  This bad data causes SNMP to return a 'Specialized Exception' to PA,
  and then Alarms which displays the 'Software Logic Error: Specialized
  Exception'.

  Are there a lot of 'things' going on with this SNMP device ? Like a lot
  of alarm rules and historian and exporter requests ?

4079.2Box is CISCO, not WellfleetCX3PT3::SHOTO::W_MCGAWFri Nov 13 1992 10:4710
Hi Keith,

The box the customer is alarming against is a CISCO box. I don't believe
there is a lot of activity going on with the box but I will check with
the customer to make sure. I did ask the customer to to do an equivalent
SHOW SNMP command to see if any other error information can be obtained
(this was requested by Stella Ko). I also forgot to mention earlier that
this customer is using TGV Multinet IP transport.

4079.3So the Wellfleet bug is outNANOVX::ROBERTSKeith Roberts - Network Management ApplicationsFri Nov 13 1992 11:2215
  So the Wellfleet bug is out.

  In v1.2 there was a bug in PA which caused incorrectly architeched responses
  to be returned to the Alarms FM. This pretty much means that *any* error
  which PA gets from the AM responsible for gathering counter data (in your
  case the SNMP AM) is incorrectly passed up the call chain; to Alarms.

  Alarms, receiving the ill-formed response gets confused, thus displaying the
  'software logic error, ...'

  The good news .. PA has been fixed for v1.3

  The bad news .. I can not think of any workarounds for v1.2

    Well, at least I can tell the customer something. He is out on
    vacation until 30-NOV-1992... Any chance of V1.3 shipping by then???

  DECmcc v1.3 *FIELD TEST* should be out soon ... but the SSB date isn't
  until January-93 I believe.

4079.6Is the MUP for BMS V1.2 a fix???CX3PT1::SHOTO::W_MCGAWTue Nov 17 1992 10:576
Hi Keith,

I understand that is a MUP for BMS V1.2. Is this something that would address
the problem we are seeing or is this for other issues?

  Walt - the v1.2 MUP will not contain the bug fixes to PA described in this
  note.  Sorry  8(

And to avoid confusion, the MUP is called V1.2.3,
and I believe the SSB is shipping it as V1.2a
