4041.0. "positioning info needed!" by EEMELI::SONKERI (Petri, DS/P&T/OSG Finland) Thu Nov 05 1992 11:00

Is there any official or unofficial positioning of

	- MSU vs DECmcc ULTRIX
and
	- UDM vs Fullsail

The overlapping functionality is a bit disturbing,
makes selling more difficult and gives you uncertainty
of which product will survive in the future...

Any comments wellcome..

This is the positioning statement for MSU and MCC at Interop.

POLYCENTER SNMP Manager 300(MSU) - is the industry-leading management product
for customers who want a UNIX solution to manage only TCP/IP
networks using SNMP. It is comparable directly to HP-OpenView
Node Manager, and Sun NetManager. The SNMP Manager is simple
and easy to use, scalable from small to very large networks,
and has the ability to distribute displays and data collection
	      around the network.

DECmcc BMS & EMS - is the industry-leading management product for customers
who need integrated management of multiprotocol network and
system environments. A complete suite of management functions
are supported across multiple protocols and devices. Support
includes DECnet, TCP/IP, OSI, FDDI, Ethernet, Terminal Servers,
LAN Bridges, interoperability with SNA management systems, BBN's
X.25, Alcatel PBX's, all SNMP manageable devices, and the list
is growing rapidly. Comparable to OSF DME, DECmcc is object
oriented and will gracefully evolve to become OSF DME compliant.
DECmcc is a more sophisticated product and can be tailored
to any customers environment, therefore, training courses
and set up services are recommended for first time users.

DECmcc Director - is the basis for lots of applications, not just Network
Management. Many OEMs and 3rd parties layer their
applications on DECmcc Director, and many more will be
shipping in the next year, including Storage Management and
              Configuration Management applications from Digital.

Future - both products will provide customers with investment protection
and incorporate OSF DME technology as specifications are released.
OSF DME API implementation is already planned to phase into future
         versions, including a common Director/kernel that'll be DME-compliant,
which will be be implemented as other DME technologies become
available from the OSF (OSF plans DME delivery 12/93)
