4037.0. "managing Novell from DECmcc?" by CLARID::HOFSTEE (E(nterprise)=MC) Thu Nov 05 1992 05:22
(Also crossposted in NETWARE)
I am currently trying to find out, how we can MANAGE Novell NETware LAN's,
from DECmcc. If the conclusion is , that we can, I would like to know how.
If we cannot at the moment , I would like to know how it COULD be done, to
make an estimate of the cost and time that it would take to develop a solution.
Now I know that this is a pretty big area and rather vague
statement , so let me try to be more specific.
I would like to have some answers to the following questions:
-Does a 'standard' Novell server generate alarms/alerts? If so,
can these be forwarded somehow to a DECmcc station (using SNMP?)
-Does NETware come with an SNMP agent? If so , what MIB does it use?
-An option that we are looking at , is interfacing NMS (NETware management
Station) with DECmcc. Has anybody experience with NMS? Has anybody already
done this? Does anybody have an idea how this could be done?
-How many of your Novell customers are using NMS? (in percentage)
-Do you use any other tools to manage Novell networks?
I am aware of the Novell AM development that was done some time ago, but that
didn't end up in a fully functional AM.
Thanks a lot for any information.

| DECmcc can not manage Netware devices today because there is no
Access Module available.
1.) Netware 2.xx and 3.xx uses IPX ( a derivative of XNS) as the
protocol.
2.) Novell has announced that it will provide an agent for some
3.xx releases which implement SNMP over IPX. Our SNMP AM as it
is currently implemented only supports the classical SNMP over
UDP, thus it would not be able to connect to Netware nodes.
3.) Novell has also hinted that the SNMP agent is a layered product
which a customer has to buy and install. It will provide a subset
of what is available via IPX. Prototype MIBs have been available
through ad-hoc mechanisms for over a year. We are anxiously awaiting
their official release. There was a prototype agent available through
Novell's Lantern management system at Interop 91 which DECmcc tested
against for hot staging. However, I didn't track what Novell was
saying at Interop 92 or demonstrated.
To provide some access to Novell for their 3.xx netware and beyond
products we could provide an IPX stack within the SNMP AM.
I estimate that this is a 2-3 man month effort.
To provide a robust solution would require a full IPX AM with support
for 2.xx and 3.xx objects. We did a prototype 2 years ago which was
scrapped when the customer cancelled the RFP. Our estimate was that
the total work effort was in the order of magnitude of 1-2 manyears
($100k-$200k). The work was not funded so it was dropped.

4037.2 | Also interested in Novell network management via DECmcc | CUJO::HILL | Dan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer Resident | Fri Nov 13 1992 01:24 | 9 |
| I have a customer in Arizona with a couple hundred PCs on a Novell
network. With well over 50% of the PC network market, I'd say that we
would stand a chance to recover the $200,000 development cost.
This would mean that, at a cost of $1,000 (expensive for the PC market)
for the IPX AM, we'd only have to sell 200 copies to break even. I
think it could be done.

4037.3 | You bet! | FRSOLD::ORCHIS::MAASS | Information, that's all I need... | Mon Dec 07 1992 11:35 | 12 |
| Hi all,
I would estimate that in the Central Germany area alone there are circa twenty
customers who would buy the IPX AM. These are ONLY customers who already have
DECmcc installed and running.
