| AMs and FMs for DECmcc (much like applications for an operating system)
are not developed in a central location. That makes this question
a difficult one to answer.
The strategy of the framework developers is to provide support
for as many platforms as possible. That includes equal support
for VMS and ULTRIX (the current platforms). It is then up to applications
developers (like the terminal server group for TSAM) to decide which platforms
they wish to support.
If you have a lot of customers requesting specific functions, please
get in touch with product management and let them know.
You could start with Dave (TOOK::) Aronson or Gail (DELNI::) Ferreira,
who should be able to point you to the right people for other products.

| What Erik would have liked to have said, but was too polite, is that
his group would be incredibly happy if my group (was called LAA, tommorow to
be called Private Networks) would come out with an Ultrix version of TSAM.
In fact in person most of the DECmcc framework folks are not above rubbing it in:
"Hey Dave when are you going to port TSAM to Ultrix huh? huh? <nudge> <nudge>"
At least for TSAM the way it works right now this is very unlikely.
It is very apparent to me, but not everyone in my management that
a TSAM-like follow on product would be very welcome, especially since
it could be designed from the ground up to be platform independant.
You might send your requests to Laurel BLUMON::Nelson, who is the product
manager for TSAM.

Vitalink has NO PLANS to port the Vitalink AM to ULTRIX. Recommended
alternative: use Vitalink's SNMP agents on the Vitalink boxes and then you can
manage them from DECmcc/ULTRIX using SNMP AM.

4014.4 | THANKS | ZUR01::SCHNEIDERR | | Thu Nov 05 1992 04:02 | 17 |
| Thanks to you all for the replys,
Doug:: Yes I saw some reports about SNMP on the new Translan SW versions. The
disadvantage is, that we can't do "SET" to all the Translan parameters, at
the moment. But I hope that the functionality will reach up in the next
verions.
Dave:: I will send a mail to Laurel. I see in the maket that the most of our
customers want to go to ULTRIX (What a shame for a VMS fan). I think
it's a MUST for us to have TSAM for ULTRIX. Not only Erik would be happy,
I think we all yould be happy.
So "Hey Dave when are you going to port TSAM to Ultrix huh? huh? <nudge>
<nudge>" :-)

I don't mean to sound pessimistic, but don't hold your breath waiting
for SNMP SETs from Vitalink (at least not on the TransLAN product
line). Even the VBAM doesn't allow you to set *everything*; i.e you
still had to get to a console interface to do some of the TransLAN
management.
Whichever route you choose (VBAM or SNMP), it would be a good idea to
hack together a little launched application that will allow you to
issue a console connect to a translan selected from the map (and then
post your hack in the MCC-TOOLS conference! ;^) ). This could be
accomplished in a few different ways, left as an exercise for the
student ;^). If you have a console connect, then you can
effectively plug any 'functionality holes' that exist in either the
VBAM or SNMP (they both come up short, but in different areas).
