3977.0. "BMS general questions??" by CGOOA::STHOMPSON () Tue Oct 27 1992 16:35

We have an important customer who is implementing DECmcc BMS (VMS). Due to
some unusual circumstances the selling cycle extended over at least one
version change and packaging change in the DECmcc products. This has
caused a lot of confusion at the customer site which we are trying to
make clear.I have a number of questions that I hoped might be easily
answered here. All comments and assistance is most appreciated.

Q1: Customer has bought DECmcc BMS V1.2. According to the SPD, dns is
not required but can be used as an option. Is dns a "beneficial"
addition or is it really optional? What does it buy them?

Q2: The customer also requires DECmcc Extended LAN manager. According
to the Buyers Guide there are a number of ways to get this depending on
whether you had DECelms, DECmcc BMS and so on. It has us and them
confused. IF they have DECmcc BMS V1.2 and they got it after the magic
April 14, 1992 date they must purchase DECmcc Extended LAN manager AM
kit. MUST they also purchase the FM kit or do they get it free with BMS?

Q3: If they have DECmcc BMS V1.2 and DECmcc Extended LAN manager AM is
there any requirement to have DECmcc Extended LAN manager FM? What
functionality do they get with the FM that the DECmcc BMS and AM
    combination together do not provide?

Q4: This customer currently also uses Ethernim. They expect to
keep it for now. Assuming they have DECmcc BMS plus the appropriate
DECmcc Extended LAN manager AM (and FM) modules will they have any need
    for Ethernim?

Q5: This customer also uses TSM? They expect to evaluate the Terminal
Server Access module at a future date. Can anyone tell me if using the
AM is better/the same/worse than using TSM and why?

    Many thanks,
    Steve

NMCC/VAX ETHERnim still provides a few functions that aren't duplicated
  as of DECmcc BMS V1.3:

  1. Ethernet Promiscuous Monitoring
	(Top Talkers/Listeners/Multicast/Protocols)
  2. Ethernet Incremental discovery
	(ELM discovers DEC bridges/concentrators)
  3. Find Ethernet Address
  4. Convert DECnet IV -> Enet Address
     - etc...

ETHERnim was built in a LAN-centric way, MCC is more generic.

Most of these should (hopefully) be addressed in the next (quick)
  version of BMS after V1.3.

BTW, does your customer do any LAN Monitoring (besides with ETHERnim?).
Any specific POD vendors? RMON pods?

3977.2TSAM pros/consTOOK::FONSECAI heard it through the Grapevine...Tue Oct 27 1992 18:4913
In answer to Q5: Pros/Cons of migrating from TSM to TSAM:

TSAM is fully intergrated with the DECmcc, of course TSM is not.
Wtih TSAM you get alarms, the iconic map, history etc.

The main detraction for customers migrating seems to be that TSAM
does not fully support 3rd party terminal servers like they are
used to having from TSM. 3rd party terminal servers are only supported
through the Pasthru utility, which is equivelent to NCP connect.
Also TSAM has slower response time than TSM (which it is layered on top
of.)

If the customer will be running more that one DECmcc station, then
DECdns is beneficial, because it allows sharing of registration and
reference information between directors. Also, if they already have
DECdns set up for use with DECnet/OSI, then it is probably simpler to
use DECdns for DECmcc as well.

I'll forward this one to someone in product management.

If you have DECmcc BMS V1.2, you automatically get the Bridge FM
and the FDDI Autoconfig FM. You DO NOT have to buy the DECmcc ELM
FM package separately.

You DO have to buy the DECmcc ELM AM package. The Bridge AM,
Concentrator AM and FDDI AM were taken out of the DECmcc BMS V1.2
package, and made into a separate package.

I assume that your customer was a DECmcc BMS V1.1 user. As such,
I would like to forward you a letter that will be going out to your
customer very shortly. It has all the ordering information that he will
need to use to take advantage of our special upgrade program
for BMS V1.1 customers who upgrade to BMS V1.2 and find themselves
without Bridge access capability. It will be coming to you in
just a minute.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me
directly.

3977.5BMS TO ELM Upgrade LetterDELNI::FERREIRAThu Oct 29 1992 16:2668
October 26, 1992

Dear DECmcc(tm) Users:

When Digital Equipment Corporation released the DECmcc Family of
Products, we made a promise to our customers that we would be making future
releases of our products more open and extensible, bringing them closer to
complete EMA-compliance. With the release of the DECmcc V1.2 Family of
Products, much progress has been made in fulfilling that promise.

But with the release of the DECmcc V1.2 software, some restructuring of the
DECmcc Basic Management System (BMS) package had to be implemented in order to
make it as open and extensible as possible. One of the major changes that has
been put into effect is the removal of bridge management (Bridge AM) capability
from the DECmcc BMS V1.2 product. The bridge management functionality is now a
separate product, named the DECmcc Extended LAN Management (ELM) AM.

Functionality included in the DECmcc ELM AM package:
           -Bridge AM
           -Concentrator AM
           -FDDI AM

Due to the restructuring of the DECmcc BMS packaging, we are offering
current DECmcc BMS V1.1 users a special, limited-time offer which will
allow DECmcc BMS V1.1 users to receive the DECmcc ELM AM license at the low
cost of $120 (US List Price). If you are a user of the DECmcc BMS V1.1
Bridge Management capabilities and want to order this part number and
receive the special DECmcc ELM AM upgrade license, please note the
following:

o Special DECmcc ELM AM Upgrade License for DECmcc BMS V1.1 customers:
	Part Number:	QL-04HA9-AA

In addition, you will need to purchase the appropriate media and
documentation associated with DECmcc ELM. If you have subscribed
to CDDS, simply install the equivalent DECmcc ELM kit.

o Media and Documentation kit for DECmcc ELM AM
	Part Number:	QA-GX8AA-H*
o Documentation only kit for DECmcc ELM AM
	Part Number:	QA-GX8AA-GZ

Customers with service contracts (or warranties) will need to order the
appropriate service contracts for DECmcc ELM. DECmcc BMS service contracts
can be upgraded to include DECmcc ELM AM at the time of order placement.
Customers must change their service contracts to receive future releases of
DECmcc ELM AM software.

o DECmcc ELM Contract Services

NOTE: * Denotes variant fields. For more information on these variants,
please contact your service representative.

To take advantage of this limited offer, please call your local Digitl Sales
Representative. If you need more information on the DECmcc BMS to DECmcc
ELM Upgrade Program, please call me directly.

We hope that this information will make it easier for you to upgrade from
