3976.0. "DECmcc using an X.500 repository" by CUJO::HILL (Dan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer Resident) Tue Oct 27 1992 13:39

    Who in the DECmcc development group has been testing DECmcc with our
    field test X.500 product?

    Huh? What do you think needs testing between DECmcc and X.500? As far as
    I am aware, DECmcc doesn't use X.500 yet, unless someone's written an
    AM I didn't know about, or X.500 has defined how it is managed (last I
    knew it was unmanageable.

Hi all,

as far as I was told, X.500 will be the standards follow-up for DNS as a name
service. If so, one should seriously consider interoperability of DECmcc with
this FT (which I don't know).

Seems like a "Shall we follow standards (and create a lot of work)" discussion to
me. We should, of course :-).

3976.3Thought someone was testing DECmcc with X.500 productCUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentFri Nov 13 1992 01:077
    I got the idea from the INTEGRATED_DIRECTORY_SERVICE notes file and the
    X500 notes file that someone from the DECmcc development group was
    testing DECmcc with the X.500 product currently in field test.

    Is this not true?

    "Testing" is too strong a word.
    "Discussing alternatives" is probably more accurate.

3976.5Request for a closer look at X.500CUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentWed Dec 02 1992 15:0516
    Hi, Colin,

    My interest in X.500 stems from the fact that my customer is using an
    X.500 product (QUIPU) running on SUN. I would like to be able to
    eventually bring in our X.500 product (currently in field test) as a
    vendor-maintained solution for them.

    Before I can suggest this, I need to be sure that DECmcc and other
    products will work with it. I may, in fact, have to wait until a
    completely integrated directory service product is available.

    Perhaps you might consider a short walk from your cubicle to the DNS
    group to talk to Wick Nichols about this issue. I'd be interested to
    learn what conclusions you reach.

    We've been talking to Wick, and others, for a while now. Needless to
    say this issues are not all straightforward, so there's no quick
    solution to the problem of changing naming to X.500 in DECmcc.

    However, we are still pursuing this route to see what it would take.
    No promises though....
