3973.1About an order of magnitude.TOOK::CAREYTue Nov 03 1992 10:2740

First off, V1.3 isn't yet in field test, so none of this is guaranteed,
only a first look at how things appear to be going now.

We've done a lot of work in V1.3 on performance, and in general the
improvements have been about an order of magnitude, with the most
significant gains on the ULTRIX platform.

    Some general trends:

    1) Modifications to the Lookinto code and algorithms. The result here
is that we're seeing lookinto times dropping from 30+ seconds to around
4 seconds on SNMP entities. Other entities show similar improvements.

    2) Notification throughput much improved. Our benchmarks show about a
ten times improvement in throughput of notifications to the Notif Pm
    and IMPM display.

    3) Map startup performance doubled.

There are other areas where we've improved the performance that we
haven't specifically measured. Other work has been done to improve the
perception of responsiveness by messing with the xevent queue and some
    stuff like that.

We're shooting for the same order of improvement for the release after
1.3, and a lot of prototype work in that area is already going on.

Finally, be careful not to overplay the improvements. They're
significant, and much needed, but we'd much prefer customers to be
favorably surprised by these improvements to having them be
disappointed because we somehow managed to overplay it.

    Hope this helps.
