3935.0. "Request for comments" by MSAM00::MIKEWARREN (Technology Consulting, Malaysia) Wed Oct 21 1992 11:38

Attached is a couple of comments from an important customer. I would be
very interested in comments on his comments. I'd generally ignore such
comments, but disturbing fact is that this guy has been to DECmcc training,
has used the product, is a very loyal DEC supporter within his user community,
and plays a very important role in determining the dierction of several
large companies inour country will go.

His Customer Comment :

	1. Some people have the impression that DEC DECmcc product may
	   die. What is your comment.

	2. Some people also think that HP OpenView has more 3rd Party
vendor participation because its API is better and is easier
to write a customised module. What is your comment?

	3. My interpretation of the long delayed V1.2 of DECmcc is that
DEC is having some problem with DECmcc and is rewriting the
system to make it more 'friendly' etc, or may be DEC is scaling
down development effort. I need the assurance that DECmcc is
not a dead end product and in a few years time, I have to start
all over again with a new network management system.

Well, grateful if you can offer me some peace in my mind.

The DECmcc product is the center of our corporate strategy for
management of everything from networks to systems, to databases, to
applciations. It will evolve to incorporate OSF/DME technologies, but
major focus on engineering and sales of this product remain.

HP does have more vendors that can launch applications from their
OpenView product on HP or SUN hardware. DECmcc V1.2 now has a similar
launch API, allowing any application running on VMS or ULTRIX to be
launched with context passing. HP does not have the other integration
ability that DECmcc has such as "data collector module", "command line
interface", "callable DECmcc API", "MCC_CALL API", and soon to be
supported "Script AM". Launch and SNMP extensions they have - 7 to 2!

DECmcc V1.2 has been shipping since July. EMS has been a bit delayed
but should be "in the mail". Major focus of V1.3 will be ease of use
    and performance improvements.
