3912.0. "Name that button" by MCC1::DITMARS (Pete) Fri Oct 16 1992 14:49

Hi,

In V1.3 you will be able to navigate from a notification
to the domain/entity that the notification applies to by
pressing one button.

The only hurdle left is to name the button.

Here's where the button will be located:

    Main Notification window:
	you are in the main notification window,
	you have selected a notification,
	you have brought up the
		Operations->Notifications->    menu
			or,
		you have pressed the MB3 popup menu

    Notification detail window:
	you are in a notification detail window and there are
	now 4 (four) buttons at the bottom of the window:

	Close   <YOUR_NAME_HERE>   Next   Previous

	plus, the button is on the Operations-> menu

    Display Notifications window:
	you have selected one notification. The button is on
	Operations-> menu.

Here is what the button does when you press it:

	1. Creates a new map window
	2. Opens the domain specified in the notification
	   (note: notification is *not* started for the domain,
	   	  regardless of your customization settings)
	3. Does a Navigation->Find to find and select the
	   entity specified in the notification

I need input from you folks. Please answer either or both
of the following questions.

1. What would you name the bottom-row button on the notification
   detail window? (Keep it as short as possible.)

2. What would you name the button in the menubar menus? (You
   can use a longer name here if you want.)

A first-pass is the following:

1. Bottom-row button:	"Manage..."

2. Menu-bar button: "Manage Entity in New Map Window..."

A winner will be selected at random. :^)

Thanks for any input.

    How about:

    Button:   	"Select Entity..."

    Menu Bar:	"Select Entity in New Map Window"

    ???

Of course I don't know that I've ever even popped up that window,
so either I'm worst or best qualified to answer this!

My enties: "Go To Entity" or "Visit Entity".

Find/Select Entity...

Find and Select Entity to new window...

The above uses current 'buzz' words from v1.2. I've never won anything before.
This is my big chance, can you enter as often as you like and do I have to
purchase a MM of my choice to be eligible??? The winner doesn't have to tour
a condo do they???

    1.) I'd opt for a "find" button since that is the primary thing you
    	are interested in at the moment. The fact that you have also
    	selected it should be self-evident when the new window appears.

    2.) In the menubar space, how about "Find and Select in domain..."

    How about the winner getting a brand new VAXstation 4000 with 128 Mg
    of memory and the lastest RZ drive thrown in...
3912.5another question...MCC1::DITMARSPeteMon Oct 19 1992 14:4230
Currently, the bottom-row buttons on the main
notification window in V1.3 are:

Close
Pause
Search...
Filters...
Notify Requests...
Graph...

This pretty much exhausts the real-estate down there.

The point of a bottom-row button is that it is used
very frequently, and therefore is worth putting down
there for easy access in addition to up in the menubar.

I'd guess this new Find/Goto/Manage/Whatever button is
going to be highly useful. If I had to rate it on how
frequently it will be used, I'd probably rank it well
above all of the buttons that presently occupy the bottom
row (except perhaps Close).

I would think Pause has to stay there (kind of a panic
button... hate to make users hunt for it).

So which button would you oust from the bottom row
to make room?

I'm leaning toward "Search...". I'd guess that would
be at the bottom of most folk's most-often-pressed list.

I don't recall mentioning anything about prizes...

The incredible feeling of contributing to such a
momentous decision should be prize enough for any
dedicated DECcie.

3912.7Endorsement of 'Find...'CUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentWed Oct 21 1992 02:3611
    To bring this election to critical mass, I fully endorse the
    "Find..." candidate and wish to encourage all of my "Select..."
    supporters to vote for this campaign "button".

    All I want is a "cabiNET" post for my endorsement.

3912.8Find it isMCC1::DITMARSPeteWed Oct 21 1992 10:4717
OK, as of right now the winner is:

    Button:   "Find..."
    Menu:     "Find Entity in Domain..."

Also, I replaced the "Search..." button with
"Find..." on the main notification window. It works
for me. (Search is still available on the Operations
menu.)

There's still a wee bit of time before code freeze,
so if you have something to say on this topic, say it
soon....

To those of you who replied:

	Thanks very much for your input!

    re: . - a few

    MXRN has solved the "button real estate" issue by simply allowing the
    user to select what buttons they would like from a fiarly full list.
    It would allow the used to customize based on their needs, not our
    perception of their style of using MCC.

    Does it have to be a name?

    Couldn't it be a picture - like a magnifying glass?
