3889.0. "Latest MIBS for Xyplex Network 9000" by ZPOVC::KUMAR () Sun Oct 11 1992 00:34

    Hi,

Xyplex has recently introduced some new hubs with some real
    "revolutionary" concepts like "mid-plane architecture".
I have got a prospect who is evaluating these hubs, called Network
9000. They come in 2 types of chassis:5-slot and 14-slot. we tried
to see if DECmcc can manage these hubs. And we ran into some problems.

    Configuration:

    VAXstation 3100 M76 with 32MB memory
    VMS V5.4-3
    DECmcc BMS V1.2
    UCX V2.0

    Questions:

I tried compiling the MIBs for Xyplex that came with DECmcc. They
didn't work. I believe this was because these MIBs were meant for the
older Xyplex hubs. Can someone please tell me which series of the
Xyplex hubs these MIBs were mant for ?

A person from Xyplex Corp, U.S.A. came down here with a TK50 of the
latest MIBs for the these new hubs. I compiled them and started to use
them with DECmcc. I suppose I should say that they worked. But I have
some problems. I am able to register them fully in DECmcc. However,
when I try to look at the hub in detail, I encounter some problems. If
I try to drill down to the lowest level of any particular item, I get
an "internal logic error 15 encountered". I know this is a bit vague,
but I'm hoping someone can tell me why I have this problem anyway. I'm
    sorry for the ambiguity.

Also, in this hub, is a card/module which is a repeater. It has 20 UTP
ports. My prospect connected 19 PCs and one Netware server to these
ports. From one of the AUI ports on this Xyplex Hub A, an AUI cable
connects to a H3350-like device, which brings a UTP cable about 20 metres
to another Xyplex Hub B and again connects to a H3350 device and connects
via an AUI cable into the Xyplex Hub. The VS3100 M76 is connected to
Hub B by a UTP. There are also other devices on this network such as a
Tandem computer. From these 19 PCs, my prospect started sending some
100 byte data streams to the Novell Server. I started to monitor Hub A
transmit and receive packets/octets from my VS 3100. The resulting
graph displayed showed that only about 1% percent of the ethernet
bandwidth was being used. My prospect said that using CROSSBOW's
FIBREMUX, he was able to detect that 70% of the ethernet bandwidth was
being used when the same 19 PCs were transmitting the same data to the
    Novell Server. So I don't know who's right and who's wrong ! I suspect
that DECmcc is not collecting the right data. Anybody got any clues
    what's happening here ?

Lastly (I promise !), I'm unable to do an "IP Autoconfig" on this
network. The error message that I get has already been reported in this
notes conference:.....divide by zero error...... I thought this was
fixed in the SSB version of DECmcc though. I get this error if I
specify the VS 3100 as the "gwy" in the IP-Autoconfig file. If I don't
specify any "gwy" , then the Autoconfig goes through without errors.
But the resultant domain shows only one IP station with a Null address.
What "gwy" value should I specify if I don't have a "REAL Gwy"?

I know this is an awfully long note and I'm sorry for that. I'd
appreciate any and all answers to my queries.
    	Many Thanks,

    Kumar

3889.1Can you post the MTU log.YAHEY::BOSESun Oct 11 1992 15:3614

	Kumar,

The message "Internal Logic error 15" is displayed when the
SNMP AM cannot read the mib information from the dictionary. Are
you sure that the xyplex mibs got loaded into the dictionary
correctly ? Mail me the MTU log, it might provide some clues.

	Rahul.
