| I'm not an autoconfig expert, but since autoconfig expects to use SNMP
as its primary resource, you may want to try specifying one of the snmp
hosts as your starting point.

3654.2 | IP Autoconfig Still Does Not Work | MAIL::CLAYTON | Merlin Clayton DTN 445-7217 | Thu Sep 10 1992 10:39 | 29 |
| According to the documentation, if there are no gateways (routers) in your
IP network you should use your own host as a starting point for autoconfig.
Will IP autoconfig work if there are no routers, or domain name servers in
the network?
The UCX local host file has all of the IP addresses defined if that makes
a differences.
Could someone please give me a brief tutorial on how autoconfig works
relative to the config file? I've read through autoconfig documentation,
but it does not explain hos it works when it looks at the variable in the
config file. Maybe with that understanding, I could figure out what I'm
doing wrong.
It's been over two weeks since I was on-site and first posted this note,
and the customer is getting restless wanting some kind of answer.
Could some that knows this please help?
BTW... My first call was to the CSC in CoSpgs. They have absolutely NO
idea what's going on or how to work with IP autoconfig.
Thanks.

3654.3 | Host need an SNMP agent | GWTEAL::WOESTEMEYER | Why??...Why not!!! | Thu Sep 10 1992 14:41 | 18 |
| Merlin,
This is Steve Woestemeyer, I work at the CSC in Colorado Springs. I
don't know who you talked to about the IP autoconfig here, but I do
have some knowledge about it. In fact I may know what your problem is
having fought it once myself.
It seems that the IP autoconfig uses SNMP to query the selected host
for it address translation table. If the host selected deos not have
an SNMP agent then all you get back is the address of the host. In the
case I fought the host in question was the MCC station, running UCX
V1.3. This version of UCX does not have an SNMP agent so the SNMP AM
cannot query the address translation tables. I have found that UCX
V2.0, currently in field test, does have an SNMP agent and have used it
successfully with the IP autoconfig.
