3623.0. "DECmcc Ultrix SBB V1.2 DECnet Event Sink problems" by PJWL::LAMB (Peter Lamb - GSG Santa Clara MAIL=MUTTON::LAMB) Wed Aug 26 1992 01:13

Hello,

I have now run into this problem 2 different times an while
I believe the engineering folks are aware of the problem I
thought I would document it here to hopefully save some other
poor slob from having the same problems I have been having.

The problem is that the example shell file supplied by DECmcc
under Ultrix for DECnet Event Sinks is incorrect. In the
example script (/usr/mcc/mcc_system/mcc_dna4_evl_setup.sh
it indicates that you must do the following...

set Node4 0 local sink monitor name -
/usr/etc/mcc_dna4_evl_monitor, by user root, by password xx

However this is actually incorrect, the release notes however are
and indicate that the correct correct line should
reads as follows...

set Node4 0 local sink monitor initial name -
/usr/etc/mcc_dna4_evl_monitor, by user root, by password <

Note the INITIAL Name in the second example. "Initial" specifies that the
commmad modifies the DECnet permenant database rather then the volatile
one. Additionaly, it is important to turn DECnet off and then on
again after issuing this command, as only then will the command
take effect.

Falure to do this correctly will result in the infamous
"DECnet IV internal error message"

I hope this helps someone...

Regards,

Peter Lamb

P.S. For what it is worth the release notes and the very
latest (sbb copy) of the documentation do document the exact
procedure correctly however the sample script in my opionion needs
some serious editing.
