Is it documented anywhere exactly how the Phase IV autoconfiguration
works?
The reason I ask is that I have tried all the various options (all
nodes, L1 + L2, all nodes in selected areas etc etc) trying different
seed nodes but all I get is more or less the same map which hardly
bears any relationship to the actual network. This network has 4 areas,
each with a L2 router, like this:

DECmcc draws half a dozen 'subnets' joined together, most of which have
no nodes connected to them. It creates some domains named according to
a couple of the L2 routers (but not all of them) one domain named
according to an area number, and a couple named maindomain-m-n (m and n
integers). I cannot work out any logic as to which nodes have been
placed in what domains.
The logic of the algorithm is the main problem but the physical drawing
is a bit iffy. e.g. most of the domains are drawn on top of each other
while one is drawn about 1000 miles to the south west.
Could somebody please clarify what is happening?

Hello Gary,
The naming conventions used by DECnet Phase IV Autoconfiguration
are documented on page 4-14 of the "Autoconfiguration and
Autotopology Use" manual. This may help answer some of your
questions.
As for how nodes are placed in domains:
If the nodes are part of a cluster, they are placed in a domain
named using the cluster alias. Otherwise nodes are placed in
domains named using the subnet name as a basis. The domains
are filled one by one, each with up to X nodes, where X is
a maximum set by the software. (I do not remember off hand
what the maximum is. I'd have to check to be sure.)
I believe that they are placed in domains in the order in which
they are discovered.
The map generated by Autoconfiguration will require some manual
adjustment. Some domains and nodes may overlap, but we hope that
little work would be required to manually spread the icons out
(or move them closer together).
I believe that it is on the wish list for future Autoconfiguration
work to improve the look of the maps generated by the software.
We did the best we could for this first pass.

generated for your network, please send me the
mcc_<domain>_registration.com and mcc_*.mcc_map files generated by
Autoconfiguration and I'll see if I can better describe what the
software did.
