3599.0. "Problems using VT1200 window terminal with DECmcc." by CX3PT2::SHOTO::W_MCGAW () Thu Aug 20 1992 12:57

I have been working with a customer who is using a VT1200 terminal
to display the DECmcc iconic map interface. He reported a problem
of the VT1200's memory being used up over a couple days up the point
that he needs to logout of the latx session and log back in again to
regain the memory.

I have reproduced the problem here at the Colorado support center with
a VT1200 (V2.2) and DECmcc-BMS V1.2. In about 1/2 hour, I was able to
reduce the VT1200 available memory from ~1865 to less than 1300 simply
by doing show commands for counters and characteristics of bridges,
stations and terminal servers. I never had more than 3 DECmcc windows
up at any time and always CANCELLED the windows after the display had
completed.

Is this a VT1200 problem (other applications on the 1200 don't appear to
use / loose the memory) or is this actually caused by DECmcc?

Any help is appreciated!!!

If the DECwindows server is running locally on the VT1200 and DECmcc is just a
client, then the problem must be on the VT1200.

One of the considerations you may want to explore is now you're running
your DECwindows. You've mentioned your running X? Are you starting up
the X Windows using VXT or EWS?

    I built a configuration using a VT1200/SPX with 8mg local memory.
Every night I would leave the terminal active, every morning I would
have to reboot it... I've seen things like the Session Manager
mysteriously going away, hangs while in the Iconic Map, or just in FCL,
and everytime I've not been able to track it down to DECmcc.

I recommend you tell the customer to try 2 paths... First, if it's
possible, try and upgrade to a VT2000 and install VXT 1.2 (I think?).
See if the problems still occur... Secondly, if they plan on utilizing
the Iconic Map display in a 24 hour scenerio, invest in a
    workstation...all kidding aside.

I'm not sure how to tell the difference. When I tested the
customers problem, I created a LATX terminal session to the
MCC host node, logged into the session manager login box and
created a decterm from the applications pulldown. From there,
I issued a $ MANAGE/ENTERPRISE/INTERFACE=DECWINDOWS.

The VT1200 I was using only had 3meg of memory to start with.

We do have a VXT2000 here that I can try some experiments with. The only
problem is that the customer doesn't have a lot of money to spend right
now. He is using the iconic map interface 24 hours a day. Maybe I should
do an SPR against the VT1200.

Thanks'
