I have heard a nasty rumor that there will not be a Chipcom access
module for DECmcc VMS. If this is true, we are going to take flack from
a lot of BIG DECmcc customers. We have been very successful in selling
Chipcom hubs and VMS DECmcc in this area, but we have yet to sell a single
Ultrix DECmcc. I may be mistaken, but I would guess that we are similar
to the rest of the company - the majority of the DECmcc
platforms are VAXes. Have we let a 'strategic partner' make a bad
business decision for both of us? Who can we talk to about this?
I wonder if we consider the existing customers when we plan new products.
We have 7 customer DECmcc sites where the customer has more than 500
nodes to manage. The smart hubs are very important in providing
intelligence to manage the larger networks. These customers felt that
they were making the safe/strategic choice to run MCC on a VMS platform
since, until now, all software modules are or will be available on VMS
and that is not true with ULTRIX (like TSAM).
DECmcc needs a better way to manage the intelligent hubs.
The current DECmcc interface to the hubs using SNMP is way too cumbersome.
It may be okay for small networks, but doing a dozen single and double
clicks is an EXTREMELY awkward way to check the status of an entity.
After the customers see the Chipcom management tool running on a SUN or PC,
the DECmcc SNMP interface feels like a stone axe. Should we tell the
customers to buy the Chipcom management tool and another platform to run
it on? Will we develop a simple graphic interface to stay competitive?
I am afraid that the inconsistant "strategic" directions we give
to the customers is sometimes good excuse for them to take their business
elsewere.

What Chipcom has done is write a UNIX application that runs on "someone
elses SNMP manager". They have, under strong pressure from Digital,
probably decided to port their UNIX application to ULTRIX, and allow it
to be launched from either MSU or MCC. While they can be made aware of
the VMS customer base, I doubt they will do the VMS port. The real
answer to this is a generic "smarthub" application that is capable of
providing a superset of functionality to all smarthubs. Then, thru the
magic of varients and object oriented programming, the widgets
appropriate to the specific vendor's smarthub (or anything else for
that matter) are presented to the user. The industry right now is
embrolled in a proprietary launch frenzy and ripe for this solution
which has been suggested before. It's one of the leapfrog kind of
solutions that Digital could provide.
