3548.0. "Problem populating local server" by CONTRA::PMCVAY (Valuing Diverse Enterprise Empowerment) Wed Aug 12 1992 15:35

    I have a server without DNS. I installed it in local area (49::).
    Getting this node registered in DNS as an MCC server is NOT an option.
    It must run locally, for reasons that are irrelevant here.

    Every operation I do (register, enroll, domain...) comes back and tells
    me "protection violation" in DNS namespace.

    I understand there's a note here that discusses setting up a server in
    local mode. I can't find it. I also can't find the method in the doc
    set.

    Oh yes--I'm running V1.2.

    Can someone point me to the relevant note or the doc set (chapter is
    fine, but page is even better). Thanks.

3548.1You want a local namespace?TOOK::MINTZErik Mintz, dtn 226-5033Wed Aug 12 1992 15:3810
What does it mean to have "a server without DNS"?
What kind of a server?

If what you are asking is how to set up DECmcc to use a local file
for its namespace rather than using DECdns, then check out the installation
manual. The installation asks you whether you want to use DECdns
or a local namespace.

3548.2Server contemplates its navel?CONTRA::PMCVAYValuing Diverse Enterprise EmpowermentWed Aug 12 1992 16:307
    I wasn't too clear, I admit.

    I did use the installation manual, and said I wanted a local namespace.
    But now MCC insists that the "namespace" is not in use.

    Um--does this mean that there ALWAYS has to be a DNS somewhere? So I
    have to install DNS on the system and point to my own namespace?
3548.3MCC_DNS_SELECTION is ?TOOK::MCPHERSONLife is hard. Play short.Wed Aug 12 1992 16:4912
How is MCC_DNS_SELECTION defined on your system?

You installed *DECmcc*, not a "server". If you want to use DECdns for the
'registration database' (crude choice of words, I know) portion of DECmcc then
you need to define the logical MCC_DNS_SELECTION to be "DNS". You also need to
have access to the appropriate DECdns servers from your system.

If you choose to use a "Local MIR" option for your 'registration database'
(e.g. NOT use DECdns at all) then you need to define MCC_DNS_SELECTION to be
"MIR".

    ARGH! That was it. MCC_DNS_SELECTION was defined incorrectly. It's
    now up and running and happily discovering everything...

    Blame it on a novice user and not enough time to run through all the
    details. Thanks, Doug. Your one answer cleared up several days of
    mystery.
3548.5DNS is really optionalTOOK::MINTZErik Mintz, dtn 226-5033Wed Aug 12 1992 17:379
If you use a local file for your namespace (aka "registration database")
then DECmcc does not require that DECdns be installed at all.
The definition of MCC_DNS_SELECTION is determined by the answer to
the installation question about namespace, so you have an easy
way to check.

Note that if you have DECnet/OSI (or any of the DECnet phase V extensions),
installed then that product may require DECdns.
