| Thanks for the input. Your hunch is right. We are using Interleaf, and
the problems are related to the Interleaf-to-Bookreader converter.
Re the table of contents: yes, the TOC entries look different from
those generated from, say, VAX DOCUMENT, but the chapter and appendices
entries for the books you mention are flush left, just like the
Preface, not as subtopics.
Re the window name, good catch. It appears to reflect the name of the
first document in the book. We'll submit a bug report.
Re the 'Title Page': yes, that looks different from other Bookreader
files (having the words 'Title Page' show up on the title page) but we
have to live with it for now.
We're looking at new tools for conversion to Bookreader, hopefully
some of these problems will then go away.

Hmm, not for me. When I first open the Alarms, I see

That's it. I'm using Bookreader/PLUS on a VMS system, by the way. Once I
expaned Preface, I see all the other books. Do you see this?
Thanks!

| And here's another problem: the Index has the same problem as the Table of
Contents, in that all Index items appear as a subitem to the first Index entry.
And another one: all other Bookreader format volumes I've read have tables and
figures that, upon clicking, appear as separate windows. This makes it much
easier to see the figure/table while reading the text.
All of the DECmcc documentation, on the other hand, have figures/tables that
appear at the bottom of the page; this necessitates moving back and forth between
text and table/figure - a real pain for the user.
Folks - the limitations of the Interleaf-to-Bookreader converter are all too
glaring. I hope you aren't planning to send these documents, as they exist, to
SSB or put them on a CD. Speaking of these problems only (not the content), they
are clearly of a quality inferior to other documentation on the Online Doc-
umentation CDs.
Please let me know how I can help.

| And more: one of the features of Bookreader/PLUS is being able to copy text
(using standard Windows cut/paste features) from a book. I can't do this from,
say, the Bridge AM book. I'm not sure where the problem is, but please give it
a try at your end, and see if you see what I see.
Thanks!

| And more: try Bookreader/PLUS' Search feature. I did it on the Bridge AM
book, looking for 'remark'. Search did find 'remark' on 5 pages. When I
select one of the Matching Entries, I get a pop-up box that says:
'Error opening book.
Title: Unknown.
File: Unknown.
Reason: file specification syntax error'
Sigh, sigh sigh.

I don't have Bookreader/Plus, but as to the question of figures
appearing as separate windows, if you move to View and turn
Hotspots on, all references are outlined in a box. Click on
the box and the figure or table appears in the original window,
without you having to scroll. You don't have to turn
view on, but it makes it easier to spot the references.
BYTW I converted the Bridge AM, Concentrator AM, and FDDI AM
manuals to Bookreader.

Yep, I had turned the display of hot spots on. And I know that I can
click on a hot spot, view what I want to, click on Back, and go back to
where I was. My point is, putting figures inline in the page, rather
than in separate windows, is not 'the standard'. At least, DECmcc is
the only manual set that uses this convention. I'm guessing that you
may be bound by the lack of functionality in the
Interleaf-to-Bookreader converter. But I feel strongly that this has
to be corrected.
If you've got access to either the VMS or ULTRIX Online Documentation
CD, pick any book at random, view it, and see what I mean:
. table of contents items to NOT appear under Preface
. index items to NOT appear under the first index item
. tables and figures are NOT inline in the book.
Please understand that I'm not faulting the care and dedication of
the DECmcc authors. From the final product I see, the tools you've
been given to work with are sub-standard.
Thanks!

| While this notes conference is an excellent place to exchange information,
I would suggest that you not count on it for getting problems like this
resolved (regardless of whether or not you get a reply here).
Internal and field test problems should go to the QAR system (see note 7)
and customer problems with SSB code should go through the SPR
(or other field escallation) mechanism.
It's not that we don't appreciate the feedback here; it's just that
notes do not lend themselves to tracking, so if you have something
that needs to be fixed, make sure it is reported somewhere where
it won't get lost.

| Hi,
I'm the MCC V1.3 documentation project leader.
Thanks for the comments on the Bookreader problems. It appears that
even more problems have occurred with the Interleaf-to-Bookreader
convertor. Currently, we are looking at various options.
I can not commit to this since it is beyond my control, but I am
pushing to have a solution to these problems by the time the V1.3
documentation ships.

| Hi .12 and .13,
Yes, I know know Notes are not an official tracking mechanism. Just
thought if it was something being actively pursued, that an SPR would
simply waste everyone's time.
Thanks for your comments, I can wait for the next version.
