I've looked at other notes on this topic, but I haven't been able to get a real good feel on whether or not DECmcc can now ( or later) do this. Here is the customer situation: They have about 45 Vitalink Bridges and are currently using WAN Manager to manage them. They know this product is going away (as far as future enhancements). They have seen the current Vitalink AM under DECmcc 1.1 and needless to say were not impressed. Some features they are looking for: Graphic representation of Vitalink Lines and backup lines that will change colors when they change states. (sort of what the Circuit AM does?) Statistics ( line capacity, traffic level, etc) They also don't feel that the Vitalink AM gives them access to the Vitalink bridges to the same level that WAN Manager does. So the questions are: Will the newer version of the Vitalink AM for 1.2 provide any of this functionality? Will the SNMP functions on Vitalink Bridges provide this? If not, they feel that the other features of DECmcc may not provide sufficient functionality in their environment to justify the expense. (Although they like the DECmcc 1.2 version of NETwork Professor a great deal). I have never worked with WAN Manager and couldn't make a good comparison of the two products. I spoke to someone from Vitalink about when the AM would be ready for 1.2, but did not get the impression that it would provide the functionality that this customer is seeking even when it is available. That leaves me with the impression that SNMP access might be the only way to satisfy a customer with a true multivendor environment. If anyone out there would like to comment on thism I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, Rick

3529.1 | You can do a *lot* w/MCC V1.2 | TOOK::MCPHERSON | Life is hard. Play short. | Mon Aug 10 1992 17:39 | 50 |
Use SNMP, DECmcc V1.2 (RISC/ULTRIX or VAX/VMS) and the Vitalink SNMP agent. You can use the DECmcc PA to get MIB-II-based statistics on the Vitalink bridge lines. (You *can't* get stats on Vitalink-specific attributes or counters). If the customer needs console access (that's basically what WANmanager does) then just hack together a TIP script (this assumes RISC/ULTRIX) and add it to the "Applications" menu. It'll be able to figure out what Translan you selectec and to a modem (or whatever) connect to it. Not rocket science. It is a MISTAKE to try to position a sale based on the strength (or weakness, or availability) of a single AM (e.g. Translan AM). (Lego doesn't sell individual blocks, you know.) DECmcc V1.2 has Sagans of nifty (and useful) features that can be exploited with just a little creativity. Most of your concerns are addressed with V1.2 of DECmcc. (E.g. graphic representation of circuits, blinky-flashy stuff, etc). There's also a lot of power in integration with *OTHER APPLICATIONS* that you may want to push (e.g. trouble ticketing, DECalert, system management via UDM etc etc etc). About the Vitalink Translan AM for DECmcc V1.2: The V1.2 version of the Vitalink AM is only planned to be a MAINTENANCE release, i.e. NO NEW FEATURES in the AM. (That is not to say that it couldn't benefit from DECmcc, e.g. stretchy icons, global entity wildcarding, etc, etc). Itr will only be available on VAX/VMS. The Vitalink Translan AM (when it becomes available) would not *directly* support those thing; it inherits them from the generic features of the platform. Unfortunately, statistics will not be provided either by the AM *or* DECmcc on behalf of the Translan via the Translan AM. > I have never worked with WAN Manager and couldn't make a good > comparison of the two products. To whom at Vitlalink did you speak? Does any of this help? /doug |
